Do you remember when...

 

How old is that

 

Not sure, maybe from the 1950s?

It popped up on my feed as I told a friend about my High School days. A friend got her parents 1964 Impala. Starlight charged person, so two up front and four of us in the trunk! 1972? Fun times playing Sardine. The old CHP office was across the street, so we had to be stealthily piling into the trunk. Ardenway & I80.

We watched "Play Misty for Me" with Clint Eastwood; Jessica Walters played his crazy girlfriend. Fog rolled in the last ten minutes (no rain check), and all you heard was a gunshot, scream, splash. I never learned how the movie ended for a few years.

 

That’s cool but way before me

 

Sacramento Bee, Oct. 8, 1949: “A drivein theater, estimated to cost $20,000, was under construction today at South Fourteenth Street, Arden Way and the North Sacramento Freeway. A permit to build the theater was issued by the county board of supervisors last month to Wilbur B. Baptist of 4425 Franklin Boulevard, representing the Allied Theaters Corporation. The show house will be named Starlite Drivein Theater and will be managed by a San Francisco firm which operates similar theaters in San Francisco and Belmont.”

The grand opening, almost a year later, featured Jack Carson in “The Good Humor Man” and Jon Hall in “(On) The Isle of Samoa.”

After the grand opening (posted above), every ad I’ve seen spelled it Starlite. By the following week, it was packaged with the El Rancho and Fruitridge drive-ins.​

I remember Fruitridge Drive, but not El Rancdo. Rancho Cordova?

Leaving the drive in, there was a long line to loop back to Arden, but a shortcut went back to ElCamino. My old Datsun 510 was my pro rally car. Leaving, I took the back road, only to find about ten guys standing across the road. North Sacramento was not a good part of town in 1974. I spotted them, flipped on the rally lights (very bright Cibie's), and floored the engine. They got the hint I wasn't slowing down but figured if I hit one person, keep going until I got home. Everyone jumped out of the way. It seems they were robbing families leaving the drive-in, but word got out.

 

Nice. The drive in in Rancho Cordova is still there..
