Many thanks. I almost thought I had something on Monday. I had an interview with another company. I was told it would be with the HR recruiter (standard practice). So, after quite a few technical questions, I'm figuring out this isn't the HR person.

Then with about 3 minutes to go, he says "So, you are willing to relocate to Boston?" ........

    Uhhhhhhhh..... "No...".

"Oh, didn't HR tell you this job is required to be based out of the Boston main office?"

"No, I was told I would be interviewing with HR today. So I haven't spoken to anyone in HR at all..."

"Oh, ok, they should have met with you first. The company used to allow remote employees, I am based in Florida, but they have recently decided to cancel that policy. I am trying to get them to allow me to hire someone remote, ,because we can't find anyone that is in, or would move to Boston. If I can get them to approve a remote position, I will be calling you back."

"Ok, thank you for letting me know that, the job posting says 'Remote Position'".

Oh, no, there are shit loads of them. Even quite a lot of Major Incident Management positions (which is what I have done since 2012). As of today, I have applied for 172 different jobs, not all are for Major Incident positions, but I would bet at least 125+ of them are. My theories as to why no one is calling me include the following:

    * Age discrimination. While my birthdate is not listed anywhere in my resume, my Army service (1985-1988) and the date of my first post-college job (1994) pretty much tell the story. In all those years in the Information Technology field, I have met maybe less than 10 that have been older than mid 50's. And that includes people all the way from bottom end grunts, to Chief Information Officers of large corporations.

    * Salary. The last time I was out of work (2015-2017), it was rare for any non-government employer to list salary ranges for any jobs. Today, Probably 40 - 50% of job postings do. And about 40 - 50% ask you what salary you are looking for as part of filling out the online job applications. I was a Manager in my last position, so even if I wasn't asked what salary I am looking for in any particular job app, I'm guessing most HR/hiring managers assume I was making pretty good money at my last job, and so am looking for a similar salary now (which is true). The majority of the jobs I have applied for are not management level, as I have not found very many of those posted anywhere. So a company may think "he was a Manager, and this is not a manager position, so he probably would not be happy with it/the salary, so just dump his application".

This is my 4th go-round of being unemployed since 2010. I have kept meticulous spreadsheets of every job I have ever applied for in each of those periods (initially, because you have to provide that specific info to collect Unemployment benefits). In the previous 3 rounds of job hunting, I was averaging at least an initial phone interview with the company HR person about every 25 - 30 applications I submitted. This time around, with 172 apps submitted, I have had contact from only 4 total companies. So the call back rate has gone down a good bit.

The most unexpected thing this round, the very first company that called be, back in January, ended up giving me a job offer. For the salary I was asking. Unfortunately, the next week, the called back to say their company executives has decided to restructure the company, and eliminate the Major Incident function completely. So they cancelled my offer, and even the hiring Manager who hired me lost his job.

So what do you think Tom?? Are they just sending a lot of this overseas?? Or subing out the work?? I know your field has changed...but experience can't be beat. Knowledge is ok. But in construction you want experience. Yes knowing the programs and processes is good. But nothing beats the guy who's been there, done that.
