I was very pleasantly surprised that my insurance company, State Farm, gave me over $29K for a 2014 with at least 171K miles.

Interesting. Well, the fuel supply rail goes to both sides of the engine. It's possible it might've cracked on the passenger side; any leak from the fuel system within the engine bay would be a most-likely source of fire. The fact that it spread amazingly quickly would suggest gasoline. Coolant doesn't burn. Theoretically I suppose hot, partially-vaporized motor oil might burn but it seems a stretch. Not sure about the other hydraulic oils (brake fluid, steering fluid, transmission fluid) but I suspect they are all nowhere near as flammable as gasoline.

What counts is that you made it out without injury.

That's awful, but at least no one got hurt. Machines can be replaced....
I'd be devastated if I lost my new '23 Tacoma. It's hands-down the best vehicle I've ever owned. I just had my rig in for it's 15K service, and was scoping out the '24 Tacomas and Tundras. They aren't bad looking trucks, but they didn't do anything for me. A lot more money for basically the same thing I have already. I'm also not a fan of turbos on gas engines. IMO, turbos belong on big diesels; nothing sounds sweeter than a Cat D9 with her blade down and singing her song.

What happened to the dude that pulled out in front of you? Why isn’t his insurance company ponying up?

It’s often a lot easier to claim through your own insurance and then let them sort out collecting from the other party. This is especially true if you have good coverage and the other party does not.

Yes, as crazysccrmd pointed out its easier and quicker to claim thru your company and let them get their money back from the other guy. As I said in another post, they gave me over $29K for my 2014 with over 171K miles. What would the other company have given me? Its certainly not in their best interest to give me any more than they can get away with.

As far as what actually happened to him - I have no idea. The way the accident happened, he was south bound, I was north bound and our vehicles were in the middle of the intersection. They pulled me out to the east side of the street and him to the west side. With all the emergency vehicles in the middle I never saw him.

Thanks for the answers. I guess I’ve been lucky as far as accidents.

I've never gone through "the other guy's insurance" in 50 years of driving. That's why I have insurance, to deal with the other company's BS. Had an accident in April where the other guy hit my rear bumper. It took months for that bitch Flo to admit fault and send my company the $500.00 deductible I had to pay out of pocket.
