For what it's worth my wife had a 2020 4R and while it was a couple years ago my kids are now 6 and about 8.5 and while people might say "you're out of your gourd" I will say that the amount of room they have in the back of my '23 Tacoma isn't appreciably different. The kids don't complain but after our trip to Maine in the summer we'll see how feel after that...

Just my experience with the seat in a comfortable spot for me. They love my Tacoma but when the lease is up in a couple years I'll have to either resign myself to the fact we won't do anymore family trips in my truck or I'll have to trade it for something bigger (I wouldn't want to, frankly, as I positively enjoy my truck). That's 2-years-from-now me's problem.

That said we took a few trips in the 4R and it was just fine especially due to the enclosed cargo area.

My wife has a 22 4 runner we love it but not a ton of room the fact that the seats recline makes it a little more comfortable for road trips but only a little. I had a 21 Tacoma 4 door it was fine for road trips but the back seat is small and no leg room. I now have a 24 Tundra and it is amazing if that is on your short list go drive one you won't be disappointed . It is really nice having real horse power and room. They are stupid expensive but so are the new tacomas.

Biggest con for me with a tundra is the size believe it or not. Sure interior room is superior but it won’t fit in my garage and that’s a big deal to me.

Went to the dealer today. Left the pro skid plate on, the bed mat, and the Lomax trifold hard bed cover. Removed everything else so keep an eye on the trade forums shortly for pro tail lights, pro shift knob, a pop and lock tailgate protector, and some interior blackout items

dealer gave me $500 credit for those mods I left on, which is better than nothing but also could just be him blowing smoke and he was going to give me $500 more on the trade anyways ‍♂️

Back in the day, the kids just rode in the bed. We wanted to! LOL.... If you needed any comfort, you brought along a throw-pillow.
Apparently, that's frowned upon these days.

Well first... trading it in is the best way to lose money on your truck that there is. Dealerships don't make money by giving people the same amount that the dealership will get when they sell the trade-in vehicle. Selling a Tacoma as an owner isn't hard to do. Basic advertising online in local markets, and some phone calls or texts over a week will get the job done. And anyone serious about buying a truck with add-ons will pay something for them.

Just be intelligent and don't hand over any keys or the title until someone hands you cash... or they meet you at a bank where they're getting a loan and they hand you a cahier's check.

Seriously. Selling the truck yourself, the difference between what the dealership gives people and what you can get selling it yourself will be the highest amount you've ever been paid by the hour. It could well be thousands of dollars.

I’d swap as much as feasible and sell the aftermarket stuff. We have a Tacoma and a 4Runner, the 4R is a lot roomier but looking back would probably preferred a Sequoia.

I get all that and agree, but by trading it in I only have to pay tax on the difference. I saved over $4000 in tax alone by trading in on a 4 Runner. In the end I would have probably come out about $1k ahead selling private, but probably not worth the time/hassle/stress imo.
