You’ll get better mileage and ethanol free and is better is so many ways I loose count, corn based ethanol (that we get in the US) is an absolute diabolical political fuckup that really does deserve many people being executed over. But power is something that it is actually good for, you get more power with ethanol which it why you get less gas mileage.

Although I agree on your earlier points, Ethanol does not have as much energy as gasoline. It is just a fact.

100% true. I think a lot of people get confused by the fact that many high performance cars run alcohol. Gasoline has a higher energy density than alcohol. High performance cars run alcohol for other reasons than energy density in the fuel.

In an engine designed to run on alcohol, it's possible to make more horsepower (at the cost of higher fuel usage) but this is only possible when the engine is specially designed to run on alcohol, not a gasoline street engine.

Wow! I'm not a big fan of ethanol myself, but this seems a bit over the top.

I think it's due to alcohol requiring less air to burn. It's crazy how those top fuel drag cars will burn through like 8 gallons of fuel in 4 seconds! :burnrubber:

In THEORY ethanol free gas should give more power. And MAYBE a little better fuel mileage, maybe not. But in the real world you'd have to have some pretty sophisticated equipment to measure the difference. The average driver will never notice any difference except that he is paying more at the pump.

It's due to the fact that you can run more boost, or higher compression before the fuel starts detonating, allowing for more power. The burn rate of the fuel is a testimony to just how much fuel and air they can cram into an engine in a short amount of time.

I usually use the 87 mix at Costco. When using ethanol free 87 or 88 it gets about 30 more miles per tank.

    OEM tune at 4-5,000 feet.

I do agree with you. But It does depend on how you want to look at the equation. Ethanol has a higher octane than gas, so it’s got increased power when blended with gas. But 1 gallon so gas contains more energy that 1 gallon of ethanol.

People have been executed for less…;). The corn industry in the US is despicable, I also fundamentally disagree with lobbyists, put the two together and you get an industry that’s cost the tax payer billions, both in medial issues from high fructose corn syrup, ethanol that’s created more greenhouse issues than solved, the list goes on and on.

I say ditch the ethanol and use pure petroleum. Better yet, fill your tank with diesel.

Actually ethanol free will get better gas mileage and will be no power difference.

it's just better fuel. No need burn food. Eat the corn. Don't burn it.

    This thread has potential.:boink:

You don't get less gas mileage because it makes more power. It's because stoich for gas is 14.7 and stoich for e85 is 9.7. Roughly need 30% more e85 to make the same lambda value as gas.

That's why you tune and add more fuel. Just swapping to e85 gives an n/a motor 10-15whp and tq across entire rpm band. If boosted you can add timing and boost to make 150+whp on almost any application. It's better than some race fuels due to its 105 octane and amazing cooling properties.
