IMG_3241.jpg Safelite has done it again... to make a long story short I had a rock chip, my insurance uses safelite at no cost to me to fill rock chip. Less than a month later it splits across my whole windshield. I call safelite and they want to charge me over $200 to replace through them. I'm going to wait until spring to replace windshield and I want a OEM and NOT a cheap safelite windshield. I'm going to find someone local that I trust to install. So where is the best place to order a OEM Toyota windshield?

There is never a promise that a chip repair will 100% prevent a crack. You live in La La Land if that was your expectation.

$200 for a windshield is cheap. They should be knocking the price of the chip repair (which you didn’t pay for mind you) off the cost of the windshield. A full 2nd Gen Tacoma windshield is around $350 if they come out to you to fix it through Safelite. So looks they they comped you a good amount.

What the hell more do you want?

I’ve had Safelite replace not only two windshields but my rear glass panels on my Ford.

They are not cheap windshields or glass.

My son had his windshield replaced by Safelite and he was given the option for oem or Safelite brand.
He had to pay of course oem was double the cost. I just had a chip repaired about a month ago and this is what I don’t want to happen. The wife’s suby had the rear hatch glass replaced and it is rusting from under the glass. Guess who ever did it didn’t prep where they had damaged the paint well. Really hope mine doesn’t do what yours did!

Also want to ask if you use any hydrophobic products on your glass like Rain-X, Aquapel etc.

Those products can impact the effectiveness of chip repair. Many times they prevent the adhesive filler from adhering.

really no point in getting oem since the next day you can get another crack due to a flying rock. Replace with the cheapest option and move on with life.

To replace the windshield under their own dime if it ever split. Now they are saying they never said that.

Their website says they will knock the cost of repairing the chip off the cost of the windshield. Which is right around $120. New windshield is around $350 they are quoting you just over $200. Math works out.

They are discounting you what your insurance paid for the repair. Thats a great deal.
In fact their warranty states they credit the insurance company the cost of the repair, not you.

Windshields are a wear item. They inevitably crack.

Sorry if you were misled over the phone.

$200 is a bargain. I cracked mine loading a wiper refill, the wiper slipped minus the refill and slapped onto the windshield. Call your local Toyota dealer and ask them who supplies their replaced windshields? My local company charged me round $300 if I remember correctly. No complaints. Just a waitin for the next chipt to happen. Seems like it's always a semi-trailor that throws the stone.

Safelite filled a chip on mine...gave me-in writing b4 the repair- their policy, regarding its possible subsequent crack...for life- will allow the chip repair to be subtracted from replacement cost.

Call your insurance and complain about their work. Fills work if the chip is shallow and out of your line of sight. That one was too deep to have been filled; the glass should have been replaced to start with.

A joy of Florida. Free windshields for everyone !

I was told by the glass company (Portland glass) that did mine and have done many repairs to the wife’s car that it was garunteed. But the garuntee is that if it cracks they will refund the repair cost.
I don’t believe that rain-x or other coating would affect the crack to the outside layer of glass unless it was applied after the chip happened.
I put a piece of painters tape over mine until I could get it in which was the next day. Keeping the chip clean for them is huge even the tech said something about it. It is winter so salt and salt brine are on the roads.
I think I would go oem windshield as well but I hope I don’t have to choose.
I’ve got 160k and it’s 10 yrs old. I’ve personally never had to have one replaced. I’ve been driving for over 35yrs.
I’ve only gotten like 3 chips in that time so if oem held up that well for me I’d do it again. Plus oem has the tint on the top.
Not sure about a windshield be a consumable item has not been my experience. Maybe it’s driving style or lack of interstate driving.

At the end of the day if you want oem get it, Safelite should be able to get you a oem if you choose.
It will be on your dime so if you plan on trading do the cheap. If your gonna keep it till the frame breaks do what makes you feel right.

I would definitely shop around your area for a local windshield replacement guy, as I went with someone in who does it that lives in my small town, and only paid $165, installed, for a Pilkington windshield (the new OEM supplier for Toyota's glass on Tacoma's).

I fail to see your gripe, you clearly misunderstood whatever they said on the phone to you. Why would they agree to replace the entire windshield? That makes no sense at all. I don't know, I had safelite replace my cracked windshield, it was a tiny chip just right in my line of view. They offered to repair it with the same warranty as above, they would deduct the cost of the repair, but I just went ahead and had them replace it with the cheapest option, non oem, had the tint on top, and rear view mirror deal installed. No issues, no noise, clear, I can see through it, cheap, fast. Whatever. It is glass. Don't think too deeply about it haha.

I get free glass with my insurance. Why are you mad that a free repair cracked. If you paid I could understand. IMO if you have a chip or a crack, deal with it or replace the glass.
