If that how you interpreted the recall notice then you're absolutely right. It's a difference of opinion that cannot be settled, because ultimately we agree.

    The recall says:
    (1) The chance exists for a leaf to break and move out of position.
    (2) When this happens damage may occur.
    (3) The remedy is to inspect the pack for the number of clips to determine if it needs to be replaced with a set that has additional clips.

Leaf spring clips are used to retain springs from shifting so, yeah, my opinion is the number is apparently important to NHTSA and the recall steps they approved from Toyota.

If it was a question of fatigue or corrosion resistance then Toyota may have suggested replacing with springs built with improved quality steel or better paint that would still only require 3 clips. But seems to me wrapping more clips is a cheaper option that doesn't change anything about the fundamental problem of workmanship or material quality.

So there's no reason in my opinion to worry too much about recall springs when adding your own clips seems to achieve the same outcome of protecting against a leaf shifting out of place for whatever reason might have caused it. Even perfectly intact high quality leafs can fan out when you flex them, so having enough clips is always important.

If I haven't had the recalled leaf springs replaced yet, will they give them to you if you wanted to install yourself. I have aal I want to put back on. Would the dealer swap over aal to the new leaf springs? Thanks

Can anyone chime in on this? I believe my leafs have 4 clips. Does this mean they won’t swap the springs out?

I've been putting off getting mine done. Glad to see the dealerships are still doing this job willingly.

I did mine about a year ago and they are already sagged, flat and can't even tow a 1500lb trailer. Don't bother with the tsb, buy some aftermarket upgrades.

I just saw this was available for my 09 Double cab. I had the TSB leaf added in 2010. I have added the Firestone air bags about 5 years ago to help me tow a trailer. I dont really need them now. I plan on replacing the coil overs and rear shocks soon. I am going to put Bilstein 4600's on the back and KYB strut assembly on the front.
Learning about this now, should I remove the bags and get it done or just leave them? Also, I had to cut off the bump stops when I installed the bags.

Why not get new leafs? They wear out over time and there is a potential that the ones you have are faulty. Pull the airbags and go get the springs replaced. Due to safety concerns, they won't (or at least shouldn't) give you back the truck without it being like it came from the factory (i.e. new bumpstops and all). You can probably sell the airbags to someone on here to recoup some of the money that you spent on them.

I was in a similar situation, having added an extra leaf. My old springs were in great condition, painted, and taken care of. For me it wasn't worth the risk of the gas tank getting ruptured (I know, low risk) but more importantly what would be the implications if I wanted to sell the vechile in the future and a major recall wasn't complete. I went ahead and had them put the new leafs in. I then got home and had to take it apart again to reinstall the non-factory items the dealer wouldn't reinstall.

Had mine replaced this past Tuesday on my 2010 AC 4X4. Took the better part of 4 hours but worth it.

I'd be tempted to take it to the dealer as is and ask them to put the airbags in the back of the truck after the dealer removes them and ask them to install the bumb stop when they put it all back together. For my truck, I took it in with the add a leaf installed, they said they wouldn't reinstall it, so I asked them to put it in the back once they removed it.... so I could reinstall later.

*edit - just make sure all of the pneumatics/hoses etc are removed - to make the mechanics job a bit easier

They told me they would charge me if they had to remove them.

Sounds like your going to have to take them off. You'll be fine without bump stops for a period of time - just don't load up the back of the truck with gravel, tackle bumps at high speed, try to jump the truck etc etc...

Took mine to the shop this morning to have this recall done. I knew the front had a cheap spacer lift/leveling kit but never thought to look at the rear. They just called, they can do the recall but wont be able to put the blocks in because the new ubolts are too short. He said if I bring new and longer Ubolts that they will be able to change them out for me and put the blocks in. Now I need to find some Ubolts and hope they get here soon.

Any recommendations on where to get good quality longer ubolts?
