No shit. I was on the verge of replacing my flat azz springs with a more manly set until Toyota started this tease. They know what the 'remedy' is.

Yeah my 2007 prerunner 4 cylinder is on the recall list. But no letters in the mail? Should I talk to the dealership or would that be a bust?

^Unless your spring is already broken, just wait for the letter. Even if you take the truck in now, the dealer will probably have to wait a while to get parts.

My 09 developed the harsh ride and squeaking in 2010. I had the dealer "fix" it, although the ride didn't improve. In the winter of 2012 the springs sagged while crossing an intersection just down the road from the dealership. They said it would be about $3000 to replace the springs.
I had the suspension shop down the road add a 4th spring, which helped but they are sagging again. I feel the original spring pack was to far gone to just add a spring, but the shop was doing 6 Tacomas a week and felt it was the most cost effective solution.
Since my local dealer doesn't like to do TSB's or recalls is it possible to have Toyota send the springs (and other recall parts) to me or a local shop? I would really prefer this to a road trip to Seattle.

That's what I don't understand, why are some people able to just get their springs replaced while the rest of us have to wait? I read one post from somebody (dont' remember what thread, maybe this one) who had a broken spring and the dealer said it was fine and keep driving until they get the parts. Toyota started this back in september, why is it taking them 4 months to find parts to fix it?

And if the NHTSA already has this, what's the hold up? And why didn't Toyota just tell us in the recall letter that we'd be getting new springs eventually instead of just saying "remedy will be announced" or whatever it said.

    First post.....

Sorry for rolling in with a rant, but I am fairly pissed at Toyota right now.

2010 Dbl Cab.....160,000 miles and other than my steering wheel cover starting to wear through, I only have this one beef.

At about 90,000 one of my springs cracked and left a chunk dangling out to the side, so I had both replaced with General Hvy Dty (?) 4-leaf springs by my mechanic.

At 140,000 my drivers side went again.

    Had my mechanic replace it.

Next day I heard about the recall so I phoned Toyota and they said "no problem, get your paperwork together and when we have a remedy you can submit a claim" (cool).
I respond, "what if another one goes?"
They say "no problem, bring it to your dealer and they will repair it" (cool)

Well....my passenger side just went. And.....not so cool.

Besides my dealer being clueless and dismissive, I had to act as a liaison between the dealer and corporate to try and get the spring replaced.
I was on the phone for hours a day, and kept getting the "I don't know".....or "we'll see".

    We'll see??????

Now they are saying that because I didn't use Toyota springs when I replaced them that they were going to have to have my truck inspected by a regional somebody or other and then "we'll see". (45 min drive each way.....date weeks away..for "we'll see"):mad:

I am over $2k deep into their problem and sick of losing time and money.
They know they have a problem, and now they are trying to act as if they aren't sure they are going to fix it???????

I have had enough. I declined the inspection (principle....truck is totally stock other than the new heavier springs) and decided to just get my guy to replace the pass. side spring and merrily wait for a class-action suit so I can join up.

Seems like dogchit customer service, which due to my crap dealer is all I have seen from Toyota.

    Okay....the question.

Am I an idiot? Am I overeacting? I am not a car "guy". I have no idea if springs should be breaking so often (under very normal conditions and loads).

Should I just suck it up and play ball? It just irks me that I have been putting up with this for a couple years and that they can't just make me whole (safe and drivable) for a lousy few dollars

Truly sorry for the novel rant intro post,
    Jonathan

Not sure that Toyota is responsible to replace your broken aftermarket leaf springs

So your "guy" replaced your springs, were they OEM parts or non-OEM? If they were non OEM springs, toyota may reimburse for the originals. My question is, and I'm not trying to be an ass, what are you doing to go through springs? Also, if you are replacing them with aftermarket equivalents that you mechanic recommended, maybe think about getting some better springs that can handle it. The guys here can make a suggestion on different manufacturers.

    Think nothing of it.

That's why I asked....because I am not exactly an expert (not even remotely close).

    I am a Residential GC.

I usually just load tools in my truck....maybe 500lbs. max.
I bought a Tacoma for the MPG's because I drive a lot, and don't tow or load much at all. (2 light trailer tows in 4+ years.....maybe one tile run that was close to sketchy)

I am that guy that other truck guys make fun of every time I try to calculate the weight on the little bits I am picking up at the yard to make sure I am not exceeding my load rating.

Never go off road. Well.... I live in a rural area, so "off-road" happens everyday in a certain sense.

I am staring to feel like I overreacted a bit.

Why are these things popping like crazy?

Is it a crazy amount of springs to go through in 4 and a half years?

I just assumed it was a design flaw in the truck that was causing it, especially since I upgraded my springs and paid even closer attention to my load weights.

The girl at the "Toyota Experience" laughed and said she expected that after the remedy was announced they would be dealing with around 70% of people that replaced with non-Toyota parts installed by non-Toyota mechanics.

Seems reasonable to not be beholden to dealer service rate buttrape, especially when your dealer sucks as bad as mine. (had just moved here.....didn't know).

You should consider airbags if you wanna stay at stock height or timbrens , I'm a residential GC and carpenter too , and I went with Dakars but I lifted

No, having springs break is something to be justifiably pissed about. Especially of you don't abuse it (I had to ask, some guys get pissed when they trash on a vehicle and OE parts break). Original spring replacement, you can probably get toyota to reimburse (from reading what my first recall letter said). However, the second set, being done by a (I'm assuming) non-toyota mechanic will probably be a price your wallet will have to eat if that supplier/mechanic didn't give a warranty on them. I still say that if you are going through springs, think about some of the manufacturers that a lot of guys here use instead of OE equivalents.

    Just checked.

General Spring claims they manufacture OEM or better.

The new ones are 4 leaf......doesn't that mean an upgrade over the 3's original to the truck?
