Ugh I don’t even have my cover off. So much painting to do. Good news is that my new spinnaker and main cover will be here soon.

first round went very very poorly. I dont know if it was because i used too little white pigment, too much hardener, or left the wax paper on too long....(my thought it not enough pigment or too much hardener) but it turned the first application almost a cream color and literally stained the surrounding area! So mad at myself. I had to sand and dremel out the first round so I could do it again. Even when trying to sand down the stained surrounding surface it isnt going away, and im not sure how much "factory" gel coat I want to sand off trying to get the stained area to go away.

I just did a test section and it looks like it came out much better (i just got a mediocre pic from my room mate because i had to go to work). So ill probably try to leave a thin layer of the new gelcoat over the stained ares to try and cover it up. Hopefully i can sand it down so it doesent look too much like a high spot but keep it thick enough it doesent crack itself. Will see what the test ares sand down to and will post some pics soon.

Anyone have gelcoat repair experience? I've been sanding off the bottom paint on my new to me Venture 17 and found all sorts of crazing in the gelcoat. Someone had already patched a few small spots when it was painted last. Now I want to fix it correctly but also realize it's a low end boat. One thought is to build a jig to flip it over, epoxy the cracks, epoxy prime and paint. Other thought is to epoxy prime and paint over what's there (fill in the worst spots with peanut butter consistency epoxy first).

I would sand the whole thing and do an entire coat of a 2 part epoxy marine barrier coat then paint it with topside or bottom paint. If the crazing is thick hit it with a dremel and put thickened epoxy filler in it.

Edit: I have been a big fan of the Jamestown marine Totalboat products. Most even have video instructions.

I have a full gallon of West Systems 105/205. Unless it's thickened, it'll drip all over. i was thinking, unfilled would potentially fill the cracks. If I go this route, it looks like I may be trying to flip this thing over.

If you sand the crazing down and you can barely feel it you can get away with out adding filler for the barrier coat. But using west system alone won’t be very good for a barrier coat. You want something designed as an underwater primer like (interprotect) or other primer. You could try to add west system 422 to your current epoxy to make it less prone to water penetration. But I find it easier to buy a ready to go product.

You can always do a light amount of silica filler if you don’t have deep gouges. Will still be runny but it adds strength epoxy without any filler tends to be brittle and will fall out chip away with time.

Thanks. I was planning on using a primer (2 part epoxy) over the hull before the bottom paint regardless. Maybe I'll try a bit of thickened West epoxy in an area to see how well it fills without excessive sag. I appreciate it.

Well, I turned the ol' gal over. 2 straps and single handed manhandling. It'll be much easier to deal with the few blisters, barrier coat, and paint this way. It's now sitting on 4x4 posts.

Tried a sailing and skiing trip, it snowed too much so we didn't even get to ski lol, too high of an Avy risk. Got nice and drunk and slept real well. Got 5 people inside my h22, was nice and warm that night!

So I got a new spinnaker but I haven’t gotten any photos taken of it yet. But my Whaler restoration project is going well.E300E66D-BE6F-4E41-BE65-6CD5421ADBDB.jpg

When I got it looked good but needed work. Running way late though was supposed to be in by now. But needed barrier coat bad.

Haha both my wife and I are part Irish. I went with the Irish spinnaker mainly because the boat was Irish themed when I bought it. It has a big 4 leaf clover on the sides and it’s name is Kinsail. Named after Kinsale Ireland. Though the name was awesome so we stuck with it when we bought it!

    These are our racing shirts!!
