I got my Tacoma (first time Tacoma owner and I love this truck) towards the end March of this year. I looked for a while and found one, my first visit to this small used car dealership I only started the car in the lot (didn't test drive it) and looked at the interior, and told the sales guy I'd like to sleep on it and think about it. After thinking about it for a couple days I went back with the intention test driving of buying it.

When I went back, they told me they were hoping I'd come back because they couldn't find the second key. The guy who showed me the truck was sure I must of accidently walked off with it. I said anything's possible, and I would look through the pants pockets I was wearing that day, in the car, etc. to see if I actually did. In the meantime I test drove the truck and made a deal for the purchase.

After checking around to 100% make sure I didn't have the 2nd key, I called the dealership about it and they said they'd pay for a mobile locksmith to come by (one they use all the time) and setup and program a second fob. The Toyota dealership wanted $400.

The locksmith was able to program the fob without a problem, but couldn't cut the key that little key for the insert. He tried several times and gave me a blank with the second fob. I've since had it cut at a different shop for a few bucks.

We'll now that it's cooler again, the sales guy dug into his jackets in the closet again and found the fucking key he accused me of taking. Dealership called and asked if I wanted it.
    Now I have three!

Found this on a thread ''how many keys did you get. When the shortages showed up sometime in March of this year it's 14 pages deep and it had other communication documents some people got with their purchases. I didn't get anything/upload_2021-11-11_8-17-47.jpg

Ahh yes, so the manual transmission crowd will feel this for 2022.

Side notes, does anyone know if we can upgrade our FOB to something fancier such as from an Avalon? The fob is so damn cheap looking.

Many are using a Lexus key card. There may be other options. Also Meso and AJT have new key housings that change the look and feel.

For what it’s worth, when I bought mine at the end of October I was given two smart keys and one regular door key. I was expecting only one because of all I’d read but was pleasantly surprised.

Harden your bark, there are storms on the horizon.
Bought in March. Still only one key (with remote). Waited a month then send Toyota CS an email. At the time they had nothing for me. So last week I replied to the email and got back a notice saying my truck was included in a service campaign. '21TD02' -Additional remote keyless entry key -remedy available - expires 9/23/23.

Go to the Lookup Safety Recalls and Service Campaigns page on Toyota.com and put in your VIN.

Mine had a recall on it for the second key.....take it to Toyota and see if they will give you one.....the original owner probably never got their second key.

A good locksmith can basically make/program anything you want.

Still working on this. I went to my local Toyota dealer (not where I bought the truck) to see if they can help. Service guy was clueless, directed me to parts. Parts guy was clueless, directed me to a sales guy. Sales guy was clueless, said I should call Toyota customer service. I called TCS, gave the VIN and they told me there were no open campaigns, same thing I can check when I enter the VIN online. I aksed if there was any way they could tell me if the truck was originally delivered with only one remote, she said she doesn't have that info. So my options are 1) call the sales manager where I bought it (Ford dealership) to try and get them to do something 2) hope something comes up on a campaign if the truck only came with one key originally or 3) just buy another

You bought a used truck. Not sure why you would think Toyota would just give you a new key. The info earlier in thread was for NEW deliveries.
Judging by your pic it looks like the previous owner gave the Ford dealership an incomplete set of keys.
Go to/call a locksmith and get whatever you want made.

So I ended up going with Tom’s Keys for a second key. Programmed it myself with their rental programmer. Smooth process, great communication from Tom’s. Highly recommend as an option, cost me around $168 which I’m sure is cheaper than a dealer. I did not need a blank cut, I had the small key insert already cut.
