Oh man...I avoid used oil like the plague. It's toxic both to the environment and handler. You only need a couple of quarts and G-oil is cheap. Plus, used oil contains moisture and does not work as well. Oil works because it is an insulator to keep rust from occurring. Used oil works, but not as well because of the non insulating contaminants in it.

I juuuust moved here a couple of weeks ago, so I don't know any good trails. I've heard about the Land between the lakes sounds fun. My grandpa owns a few hundred acres of land that he hunts on and there's pretty knargly unkept trails there. But I got to fix my 4WD first. Once I do that, I'm down to do some trail ridding.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Yep, I do this too and haven't had any problems. Cleaned oil and grease off of 50 year old frames and the metal looks perfect underneath while the rest of the vehicle leaves lots to be desired in many cases. I've injected oil inside my frame twice now and feel pretty confident she'll last a long time. The outside I just keep clean, it has that undercoating crap on it from Toyota so there's not much point in applying oil there.

I've been here about 6 months. But haven't found much in the way of wheeling spots. Most of the OHV parks are at least two hours away. I'm guessing there's closer "locals" spots somewhere around here!

I live in WI and we use lots of salt for 4-6 months of the year...
I wire wheel the rust spots and touch it up with paint a few times over the summer....
This fall after my last touch up I sprayed the whole frame with fluid film....
It's a little bit of work but it's worth it..
My 2010 frame looks like new and most used trucks, runner FJs have rust everywhere and look like crap....

Amazon has that 3M rust fighter at $36 for a 30oz bottle!

Are you suggesting hundreds of dollars on just the 3m product? Not saying it isn't the best out there, but sheesh!

Sorry to bring up a 6 day old thread, but I have a question about fluid film. Does fluid film trap road salts?

I coated my frame with KBS Rust Seal on the outside and Cavity Coater wax on the inside of the boxed frame section. I accidentally missed a small spot and I wanted to protect it against rust!

I would say clean off the exposed, untreated area of salt before applying.

coming back to this, any tips for coating the TOP of the frame with fluid film? I've used the little 360 degree attachment nozzle to do the inside of the frame rails, but not sure how to do this top. Maybe get the kind in a gallon bucket and use a brush? :notsure:

FYI, here's the little 360 degree dude. Puts out a LOT of pressure. Also, a bitch to keep it on the can while using. Very messy.

when I do oil I'm using a standard spray nozzle from an air sprayer. not rattle can, but air compressor type. the fan pattern works and I even hit the underside of the body and that drips a little back to the frame.

I used 4 cans last night and probably could have used 2 more. But really all I need to focus on at this point is the tops. Maybe I should spray some on a towel and wipe the top of the frame?

If you have more than one vehicle, and access to air compressor, I recommend the Fluid Film sprayer, and either a gallon or even 5 gallon bucket of fluid film. After getting my replacement frame last summer, I did just this. It is a bit of an up front investment ($270), but the equipment works great, especially the 360 degree spray head on the end of a 3 foot extension. You can cover all of the boxed areas of the frame, and lots of other almost inaccessible areas too. I did a total of five vehicles, and used less than a gallon of fluid film (and I was not stingy with it). It is very clean to apply, compared to oil, wd40, or other more liquid coatings; no dripping. New York State is now testing it. Was out driving last evening, and they were spreading salt on a perfectly dry road, and no snow predicted for days. My tax dollars at work!!
