I totalled my car last week, need a new one, and wanted to pay cash for something. Tacoma caught my eye, but I don't want to finance a new one. I found this deal on craigs list, a 2000 /w 143k miles guys asking 4500 with a salvage title, price is negotiable. It's a base model regular cab, with 4 cyl engine, automatic transmission.

I have not looked at it yet, but plan to later today, I think 4500 is way off the mark for a salvage title, im thinking closer to 2500-3000.

He claims it was not wrecked, and he thinks the salvage title was from the vehicle being stolen, but he said it had the salvage title when he bought it in 2008.

I have not pulled a carfax on it yet..

I know some people will say, salvage title no no no.. but im trying to buy a cash tacoma for under 5000$. keep that in mind..

Take it to a mechanic for inspection. It very well may have a salvage title for a stupid reason.

see what the carfax says on that one. I'm not too big on carfax, but you can see what kind of accident happened and a little more info. Have a mechanic look at it for sure.

if your car is stolen it IS NOT turned into a salvage vehicle unless major damage occured when it was stolen/broken in to. (more money than the car was worth fixing for the insurance company)
**The good news is a salvage title is not as bad as people think. I used to own an auto dealership and buy salvage cars all the time. ALL SALVAGE MEANS IS THAT THE CAR WAS WRECKED MORE THAN ITS WORTH.(and the insurance company decided to pay the customer off instead to fix it)
Now this does not mean that all salvage cars are good. Some are bad. Every car has a different situation and is unique when salvaged.

But every car has to go thru a safety inspection from the CHP and pass all safety requirements before being sold as a "salvage title". So if the guy has been driving since 2008 as a salvage title, and he maintains it, you are fine. Just dont pay too much

so im assuming the 2000 tacoma did not come with a 22R engine stock eh? that does not sound very promising at all.

From the photo in the ad, the truck has the 2RZ motor in it.

FWIW, I have owned 2 cars that were salvaged. They both turned
out to be great cars that I enjoyed for many years and were reliable.
Because of the extremely high cost of body work these days, very minor
damage can 'total' a car, in the eyes of the insurance company.

Just do a thorough inspection, and make sure that the pink slip is in the name of the seller, smog is already done, and that everything else is on the up and up.

I have done all the hi-pro mods for a life time, since I got this truck at a great price, I will be happy with showroom new.
Man, I understand your situation, and I am not trying to be a knowitall, but I read the post twice, and if he want's 4500 DOLLARS ? sorry but that is just way too much. Don't toss away the money you have so fast.

$4500 is way too much for a 2000 with almost 150k AND a salvage title.

    $4500 is a lot for a 2000 with almost 150k and a clean title.

ditto ^ (looks we are just flipping between "should i buy" threads)

a 2000 reg cab 2wd with 150k like that is hardly worth 4500 if it was clean. with a salvage title its worth half that. The only reason i would buy a salvage title would be it i was going to hack up the the vehicle and turn it into a project car.

Thanks for the advice guys, Im gonna pass on that one. Here's another one I was considering, but it seems a bit high, little more then i want to spend, what is a reasonable offer?

    http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/cto/2966916583.html

Im also looking at a 2004, V6, Automatic, XtraCab, Prerunner TRD, with 122k miles, it's a dealer and he's asking 10k. I think it's got a toolbox and aftermarket stereo too.

Im trying not to finance, but my top dollar on financed is about 10k, hard to find them in that price range.

I find it interesting how these seller put the least amount of info to let the buyer know what their getting into. I think you rather wait and keep searching because a clean vehicle with a great owner will most likely provide you with the most information such as history, repair, and whatnot, which you need to know to ensure a good transaction.
