As to the original poll question, here's my opinion, for what it's worth, LOL

There has also been a new buzzword : "Civil Union".

If two men or two women want to enter a "Civil Union", then I have no negative feelings on that. Tax benefits, beniciaries, etc. - whatever. They could be close friends, or "life partners".

MARRIAGE - a.k.a. Holy Matrimony, is a ceremony / bond that is led my a MINISTER (or Justice if the Peace, LOL)

Whether two men or two women want to be together is their business. Don't shove it in my face, that's all.

Marriage, to me, is almost like saying "God accepts this". Well, believers and non-believers alike should know by now that God does NOT accept this.

I do not condone homosexuality, but frankly it's none of my business what you do in your bedroom. That's YOUR life.

I DO have a problem with using the term marriage because of it's tie-in with God.

    so... symantecs.

Excellent opportunity here and I'm glad you spoke up. Per your statement, faith allows for contradictions as there is no requirement that things makes sense or follow any semblance of order. Accepting that as fact, then yes, religious people make sense.

Here's an extreme example from my personal experience. For a time I worked with a woman who was extremely into her religion and their beliefs, so I'd ask all sorts of questions in an attempt to understand the pull. One conversation went like this:
Jehovah's witness: "We don't celebrate birthdays."
Me: "Not even Christmas? I mean, it's the birth of your lord, right?"
Jevohah's witness: "Well, the name has a 'A' in it, which shows that its roots are based in paganism."
    Me: "Really?"
    Jehovah's witness: "Yes."
Me: "You realize 'Jehovah' is spelled with an 'A', right?"
    Jehovah's witness: "..."

So Pster, I have a simple question for you: Do you believe God created the universe or was it natural selection and evolution?

like you stated above, a JOP (appointed by the state and actuing on legal authority from said state) can perform a marriage...in a courthouse, nowhere near a church and two athiests/pagans/wiccans can wed, hence this process is NOT "holy".

and if a man and a woman can kiss on TV, why cant two guys and it not be ok? there's not a man here that would frown upon watching two hot lesbians kissing....pure hypocracy. no one person nor group of people set the factors for what are considered the "norm" or the moral compass for everyone else

I haven't been keeping up with this glorious debate....

In this day-n-age, there's no way in hell you can consider marriage as a religious matter.

If you're pissed off about same-sex marriages, then you should be pissed about all the divorces amoungest opposite sex.

Whatever happened to "Death do us part"??

The Jehovah's witness individual certainly doesn't study the same Bible I do! That "A" stuff is just plain crazy, but what you will find is that there are as many different interpretations of Bible passages as you will find with any group of people that read the same words. I personally struggle with the message in the Bible to Evangelize. It is a very sensitive thing and more often than not offends the intended recipients. I try to avoid it and let my actions and words speak for themselves. As for the universe creation, I do think there was a higher power involved in its making. I follow the CERN exploration for what the scientists call the "God Particle" carefully...and find it extremely fascinating. Back to your question: I don't take everything that is written in the Bible literally. When you study the historical and cultural world of the times the Bible was written (30+ yrs after Jesus' death), it is more understandable. I do believe God created the universe. How and when he did, who knows. All you have to do is Believe, you don't have to Know.

That was a remarkably well thought-out and presented case. Your stance is firm, your reasons are sound, and you take a critical approach to the verbatim teachings. Our views differ dramatically on a lot topics, but I gotta say...you're alright, man.

Watching is enough of a sin, doing is something entirely different. As for your "norm" argument, you are just flat out wrong on this. You are trying to place your agnostic and anti-religious beliefs on others. Calif voters have in fact set the norm in that state.....

Thanks. It's almost like our creator gave us the ability, through science or otherwise - to find him. I think we each try in our own different way.

That's sort of the problem that permeates this issue. The term "Marriage" does not automatically mean it is a union approved by Christianity. The general definition of marriage is:

Thus in other words, it is not specifically religious.

Secondly, since the US government is supposed to be by default free of using religious favoritism, using the argument that marriage is anything other than a legal procedure enabling such things as taxable status and so on doesn't work in the case of whether it should be legal or not because as mentioned- the US government is not ruled by Christian ideology.

Lastly, if you're one who vehemently opposes same sex marriage, than how it would be good to specifically list how same sex marriage affects you personally. We are free to worship as we please. Not everyone agrees with your idea of what religion is. Thus if the only argument here is that by going against traditional values it makes aspects of your life negative, then its too late because there are already many, many people doing things( including other Christians) that defies Christian morality. So in other words, lets say you wwake up one day and suddenly, same sex marriage is legal ( which will eventually happen). Let's pretend you go about your day. How is would other people getting married that you don't know affect you personally?

Oh...your statement sounds just like the gay lobby that has just declared this very day that "the voters of Calif should not be permitted to vote on this issue because they are a bunch of uninformed stupid idiots. There is no valid argument against gay marriage so putting it to a referendum is wrong". So you are agreeing that Calif voters are wrong? By voting for Prop 8 I would think they clearly have a purposeful intent to block gay marriage, whatever their individual reasons might be. If, as the Supreme Court of Calif today ruled, Calif voters can change their state Constitution, I would suggest to you that that is abjudicated proof positive that Calif voters can set their own laws and what they want the "Norms" to be in their own state. Your argument just doesn't have any weight to it. Calif voters purposefully and intentionally voted down gay marriage. Fact. God Bless California for standing by it's foundations of Majority Vote.

if the voters voted that way then i would respect that. but what i was getting at is that no religious group, no only pro-gay group, no one political party should set the prescedence for it. the gvmt is leaving it to a state by state basis and thats fine. if the state votes one way or ther other, then thats how it should stand. they should respect the vote and not bitch and whine about it...thats from either side of the issue.
