I think that you will find that many gay people find the term "marriage"to be a religious term. They are more likely to support same sex partnership equality. If two same sex people have committed to each other and have joined in a legal "partnership" then they should be afforded the same rights that a "traditional" couple have. If we truly have a country which believes in equality and separation of church and state then we need to to stop following the religious meaning of "marriage" and look more closely at legal unions.

For the record, homosexuals find it very offensive when you refer to them as "homos". I find it offensive when you refer to one of your close friends as a "really good gay person". If you really thought he was your friend he would just be a "really good person".

i'm saying that u are trying to hold people to YOUR beliefs that are pushed on you by YOUR RELIGION. we are given the simple freedom of and from religion in this country. you cant try to hold people to a religious system that they do not believe in. hell, look at all the presbyterian (i'm sure thats spelled wrong) gay ministers...they're christian and preaching to hetero's. my step-mom is an ordained minister and lesbian and a published author. the whole religious BS that it is completely shunned is exactly that, BS. your book says not to judge, but yet thats what you are doing by saying that gays/lesbians/transgenders are not equal enough to a straigh person andnot able to marry, eventhough if it were legal by MAN, they could get married w/o setting foot in a church.

    This is an interesting topic.

I do not agree with homosexuality however... According to the Declaration of Independence one has the right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and the 1st amendment of the Constitution concerns the freedom of religion. If I'm not mistaken marriage is a "institution" recognizing the relationship of individuals by the state, religious institution or both. With that who has the legal right to deny a couple marriage based upon their sexual orientation? Not long ago women and blacks were not allowed to vote, blacks were made to drink from different water fountains, use separate bathrooms and ride in the back of the bus, they were treated as inferior and they were denied civil rights based upon their race or gender.

You can not deny one marriage based upon sexual orientation because you are denying them the right to liberty and happiness, because of freedom of religion and because of the supposed separation of church and state.

The argument that it isn't natural is mute considering all the things we as humans do. Life support, stem cell research, genocide all of which are not on the "natural" order of things. Many great apes and monkeys in the animal kingdom participate in homosexual sex, many animals are not monogamous. 2000 years ago in Rome and in Greece homosexuality/bisexuality was quite common and accepted. To me natural seems to change with the times to suite a generation or civilization. Remember human sacrifices?

    That's my argument.

lets put it this way, in my opinion, I do not believe in it, nor do i approve of it, however, we have to showlove towards people and tolerate them as much as we dont want to. and in this case, I believe in marriage between a man and a woman.

Wow, interesting discussion. I'm really surprised that it maintained a generally civil tone. Even up here where it has been legal for a while, there are still strong words used in heated debates on the topic.

Pster, good on you for standing up for what you believe. I disagree, but you argued your case admirably, even if you did resort to cliches on occasion.

As for the homosexuality thing, really, why does it matter so much to some people? What two consenting adults do to each other is their business, not ours, not the state's (within reason of course).

As for the age of consent, we recently upped ours from 14 to 16, and Canada is generally held to be more, well, liberal, in that sort of thing than the US. I think the changes are a response to the desire for more liberty without sacrificing protection for those who need protecting.

Ya, anyway, go gay marriage! I'm straight, but anti-marriage (I think it is an antiquated tradition stemming from a time when women were property and marriage was a way to stake a claim). If they're dumb enough to want to be married, let them. It's their life.
