I am toying with an offer for a job working as a research tech out of the San Bernadino area (Redlands). What's doing over there and is it a cool place to live?

    Digging:

    The Weather
    J-Tree being an hour away
    Good surf nearby
    New place/ lifestyle

    Not digging:

I'm a whitewater paddler..... no rivers!
    Cost of living(?)

cost of living shouldnt be super bad cause its basically on the way to the desert on the outskirts of "so cal"

as for whitewater, 5 1/2 hrs gets you out to the kings river east of fresno .... my friends and i go every year and its about that long for us to get there from the bay area too

Edit: i know my response is somewhat vauge but ive never actually LIVED in the area but have been there a few times

I live in Riverside, about 20 minutes southwest of Redlands. Redlands is a cool, college town. Lots of great outdoors stuff to do in the area: lots of great trails, rock climbing, mountain biking.

Does get hot in August and September, though

I live in Yucaipa, a city right next door to Redlands. Redlands is a nice place but like any city, it has it's less desirable areas so be selective. It's also centrally located to the desert (J-Tree), the beach, the mountains, but not too close to any whitewater. And like these guys said, just don't live in SB.

I have lived in redlands for 19 years and it is a great place to live. There are shitty areas in every city. San Bernardino isn't the greatest city, but the north end by cal state is just fine. North end is pretty quiet and i am still on the fence of buying a condo in north end SB. If you can afford it, spring for a place to stay in redlands or east highland.
    Best of luck to you

Thanks for the info and feedback guys!

I'd be renting so I'll be sure to get to know the area before signing a lease.

I guess I'll have to figure out a work schedual that gives me time off in large enough chunks to make it to the mountians...

What else is there to do in the area?

Watch an episode of COPS, it will give you a good view of the city and surrounding areas.

I live in Redlands and grew up here in SoCal it's not bad but get ready for lots of smog and traffic. As others have stated we have some great mountain biking and off road trails. It's also only an hour to the mountains or beach. I would recommend looking in Redlands and Loma Linda for living purposes.

ugh, thats a bit too far. So what would be a realistic drive (say under an hour) to Barstow that you could live at, and actually enjoy life, lol.. (ie: good bars/restaurants, etc)

Someplace you dont have to worry about your house/cars/possessions. Safe to walk in the streets at night w/o wondering if you're getting robbed. That kind of stuff.
