A solid axle does surprising well out in the open desert too. There are quite a bit of pro's vs cons when doing a 2wd to sas 4wd swap but as you mentioned, it being your dd, doing the swap in steps (even if keeping it IFS) is not going to happen over night.

I would ride a bike to work haha, I would rather not swap the tranny, I think if I got everything on hot standby I could do it in 2 days. I lifted it in 5 hours, rear end swap in 3 plus wiring the elocker

The whole gear thing is what scares me, hard to get the ring off the carrier and precise measurements right?

You would think so, but I would say it will take at least 2+ weeks and that is being very biased.

You got me there, I guess it's not as hard as it portrays itself to be.

...Unless you don't know what you're doing to begin with.

Its all in knowing what you're doing and knowing what you need before you begin. If you can find a donor truck you'll have almost all of what you need. As for sas its the way to go for an expo build in my opinion, but not worth it if you're going to go cheap and not do it right.

I disagree, I think ifs is better for expo, I have never seen a SAS expo Tacoma. Ifs is better for long range driving and for on road driving as its my daily driver. I think broken axles are less common in ifs as well. As for going cheap, I was planning on inchworm gear transfer case... not cheap. The only donor parts needed are a diff, speed sensor, spindles (or bearings to carry CV), and a support to hold everything in.

If you can't do it by yourself or with existing friends, pull out your wallet and take it to a shop.

I like building, its a hobby at this point so I wouldn't take it to a shop. its still in planning stages, I am slowly getting parts together. I still haven't even tested the limits of me new elocker...

Good luck, not to be mean, but it sounds like you have just enough knowledge to get yourself into trouble...

SAS is what I would recommend and it will be plenty strong and less moving parts.

I have a mid-travel Jeep and its obviously straight axle, it will do ANYTHING, even outrun most trucks in the open desert...and still drive up a rock quarry. Sucks bawls on the street though.

Anyway good luck if you decide to go forward (anything is possible with skill, tools and patience) after all I do have a Corvette motor with a T56 in my 1st gen...

    I'm a REALIST...haha.
    How you doin bud?
Getting ready to head to the Del Mar fair in my Corvette powered Tacoma, maybe I can pick some races to own a couple of people on the way..;)

On the way back from Havasu some dude in a Honda Civic tried to race me, I was surprised he could almost hang! Almost....had big "Built" stickers on his side windows, he had something special going on, I had a passenger a dirt bike and an extra 300 other pounds of stuff and I still pulled away.

Time to make it faster, that was too close of a race for me. My old turbo setup was surely faster on top end and had over 400hp, now I only have a little over 310. Weak sauce.

The more I drive my truck, the more it seems "meh", then I get into the Camaro and I can feel the extra 300hp, lol.

Time to order more parts, the only issue is the heads I want are close to $3K but are the best out there (AFR heads CNC ported) I might have to settle for something cheaper (actually I know I am, lol).

Still not sure if I will turbo or just go all motor, an all motor build should put me at the 450-500 mark if done properly, but the fuel is the determining factor how much timing I can run which will limit what I can do..damn shitty Ethanol fuel. Wish we could get better gas, god knows were paying for it but getting cheap shit!!!!

Over $4 per gallon and the shit barely burns, Uh-oh I feel a rant coming over me, better go now....

All motor stroked IMO, Turbos are neat, but tend to come on hard, i.e. wheel spin.

Not always if you size it properly, but I have to agree this statement holds true more than not...I can build an all motor setup that will come on harder than a mild turbo system when it comes down to it.

But I dont ever set out to do a "Mild" build, go big.... But in the end it needs to be very streetable, thats why I lean toward turbo, I can build the motor differently and have it run like a stocker unless I flip the switch (electronic boost control), then my wife could still drive it, lol.

All motor tends to be more on the "Better know how to drive it!" type of situation since they are usually cammed-out beasts! And I do a lot of long distance driving so want good mileage and all that jazz...you know, the cake and eat it too? ;)
