Doug, i looked at the shock and the oil appears to be coming from the motor side where the shaft meets the body.

I have a mustang that had the input bearing on the trans go bad and it mad the same noise. Clank under a load when the rpms were just right.

 

My management is so dumb they forgot to charge me vacation for the super trip.

 

When was the last time you had you valve/tappet clearance checked? Funny, not sure if the 4 cyl is hydro or solid, but on my 4.0 all my valve noise went away after I readjusted the tappet/cam shims. and yes it is in the owners manual for 60/120k maintenance.


that noise sounds like a combo dry valve train and alot of lash.

 

Throw out bearing seems more like then, if it was the valve train and lowerend it would do at said rpm all the time. Input shaft bearing possible second would be my guess then.

 

Sometimes you can feel it "clicking" in the shfter.
