I went in my FJ a few years ago. It's close, short, and fun depending on the lines you take. I'd love to take my Tundra up there but I've heard the LEOs have been enforcing the area more lately since it is technically illegal to be up there (some is private property, too) so I'd rather not have to worry about that. I'd be down for another local run to SD though (Saturday). There's also a group of SD 4x4ers going out for a night run East of Ocotillo to the mines.

Couple friends and I are trying to plan a week vacation next year to the San Diego area. We are trying to figure out some places to go to make the most out of the trip. Anyone have some suggestions. I'd like to visit @Pelfreybilt while I'm down but I'm looking for other suggestions.

Do y'all want to see a little of everything or mainly city?
If you want to drive ~45 minutes I would recommend driving up to Julian and visiting the Julian Pie Co.
There's not a whole lot up in Julian but it's a unique little town with a little store that sells some pretty cool juice blends (Apple/cherry and a few others), and there's a old timey soda bar that's cool to drop into.

If you want to see some of the bay/ocean I would go up to the point loma light house, coronado island, Shelter Island, Ocean Beach Pier, and Pacific Beach.
And of course if you're near Pacific Beach you have to stop by Mr. Frostie. https://www.yelp.com/biz/mr-frostie-san-diego

Hi Corey! Your location says your from Pittsburgh. If your here during the football season and a Steelers fan, Bub's in Pacific Beach is a Steelers bar.

    Long time SD native here:

You may want to check out Stone Brewing in Escondido, near the hospital. If you wanna drive to Temecula- there are lots of wineries to visit. For an early lunch- check out Georges on the Cove in La Jolla- sit up top- clear view of ocean.
El Indio has great fast Mexican food- been there since the 1940's

I just heard today that some developer bought the Welk area land and is sitting in a BMW near the Deer Springs entrance taking down plate numbers, and also that LEOs and occasionally a chopper patrol the area. SO if you go it use the back enterance if you can find one and cover your license plate numbers or remove plates completely, or go at night and use your NVGs! Damn people always trying to spoil our fun...

Too bad TW members couldn't pool together and buy the land for ourselves!
