I'm experiencing power loss while offroading sometimes..

Background: I'm on 40" tires, supercharged, regeared to 4.88s, and have a rear air locker on my Tundra.

This happens maybe 5% of the time I'm on a technical rock crawling trail but the truck completely gives up as far as momentum goes. The engine runs but I can floor the pedal and get no RPMs going. It typically happens when I've stopped on some rocks and there's a giant boulder or two behind (or in front) of one or two of the wheels and I'm going uphill (either forward or in reverse). I'm talking boulders that are over half the height of my 40" tires. Even with the rear air locker the truck wouldn't budge.

We disconnected the battery for a few minutes last night on our trail run and I think it fixed it but I'm not sure since there wasn't too many hard obstacles left to get hung up on; doing this resets the computer's learning of your driving habits and other knowledge.

 

I have experienced this in my tacoma a few times. I didn't think it was a issue and it might be a characteristic of this new model. Since I have no real off road experience to speak of before owning this truck. I am interested to hear what the outcome is on your rig.

 

any check engine lights or is the traction system kicking on? i know sometimes the computer cuts throttle when both the brakes and gas are used at the sametime

 

Just thought of something.. stupid of me.. and I'm normally in a very good habit of doing so.. but I probably forgot to completely turn off traction control (by holding down the button for 3 seconds) after starting my engine in 4-low; not saying this is the reason why but it could very well be.

 

The traction system, when it kicks in, cuts off the throttle, completely?

Also.. here's exactly where it died last night. This is a video from the perspective of the YJ that was following me (ie. you'll see my truck in front of him) and the first part of the video shows where I got stuck; I ended up winching out a bit since I had no revs backward or foward. It's a completely off-camber spot while going uphill and barely wide enough for Jeeps so I was riding the rocks and at one point when my revs vanished my passenger side was half an inch from the rock face on the right -- I did tape my passenger rear door a bit down to the metal (ie. not a dent but the paint got eff'd).

His video doesn't really show the fact that as I got out of that first part I actually made the obstacle easier by breaking down some of the rocks.

Understood, I am still learning how to use my truck. I know it's 2wd and all, but I have gotten just about to the top of a small steep hill. Then the truck just stops and gives up, foot pushed to the floor on the accelerator. The engine revs, but there is no power to turn the rear wheels, just high revs.

Yes aired down to 18 psi auto lsd engaged and I think it's a 3.5 v6 in this 17. The gear ratio is really high in it, but it was like everything just disengaged. I got tugged up the rest. It's only once, because after that I kind of figure I hit the limit with it. Lol
Btw this was on cleghorn on the first long uphill off shoot going in off the 15 frwy.

 

Curious about this too. I have seen this happen a few times out on the trails. Never happened to me though

 

I am so glad that my 06' has none of the traction control crap, our T4R has it and it has done nothing but scare the shit out of us when it kicks in unexpectedly and causes a loss of traction or a feeling of loss of control of the vehicle...nothing like having your brakes seemingly be turned off while your going downhill on loose dirt

 

Anyone know where to pick a forward bed rail? The one closet to the cab???

Are you pushing on the brake while this is happening? Fly by wire vehicles will usually kill the input to the gas after a certain degree of gas and brake being applied simultaneously. This prevents thing like that officer's death when his floor mat got stuck under the gas pedal and the brakes weren't enough to overcome the power of the vehicle. Iirc on tacomas they cut the gas pedal and reflashed the ecu to prevent this.
