Hey gang... I have not been posting because I was in Baja for three days, riding with a friend in his Tundra 4x4 (Sat-Mon) to visit historic and geologic places of interest, and have been recuperating from all the walking and bumpy driving.. PLUS, working on a photo-filled trip report. I will post it onto the Tacoma World Trip Reports (in Off-Roading) forum when done.

Here is a teaser... from the first two days (Mission Santo Domingo, La Lobera sea lion crater, Mission Rosario de Abajo, La Bocana Beach, the "Viking ship" petroglyph, as seen on TV's America Unearthed):

Probably a long commute from So. Maine not working in your favor for getting sleep either!

    - just joshing ya. Just saw your location and it made me lol being in the SDBS area. Once in awhile I go to the Northeast BS thread to see what’s going on back there too.

I'm here in SoCal for another month unfortunately. I miss back home. I get so less furious with the traffic back home. And there's so many less people . And trees. SD is missing trees. Yeah, I know they're not that far away from here, but I miss seeing them everywhere

Next Sunday(25th) maybe? I'll be off work by 11 at the latest. I'm going up to Otay on the 22nd with some coworkers, so I'll be able to see that.

    Well,

I did this today. And I didn't like it .

I started at pio pico (? I think) and got to the second picture and ran into border patrol a bit before that corner. And I was freaked the fuck out.

I AM NOT A MOUNTAIN SWITCHBACK OFF-ROAD GUY

That being said I sat there for good half an hour had a twisted tea and honor of my buddies 2-year passing and drove back down only to find the gate was locked. And the ranger shack didn't have a key.

So after being told that someone would come by unlock it I waited 40 minutes until I called again and someone said that I have to drive all the way through, which freaked me out a little bit. Is that border patrol guy going fast around that corner and me getting stuck in the ditch for a second really struck my nerves.

Then I follow that for quite some time and ended up at this big kind of roundabout with a bunch of exits and the 3-3 water tower I think. And the one the GPS told me to take was closed. Luckily there was a border patrol parked near there he told me which way to go. I had to go down to the Marron valley gate.

That in itself was an ordeal. I somehow took the wrong turn and ended up at a gate down the road from where I was supposed to come out. Thankfully a frantic called to the border patrol checkpoint guy he was able to come and unlock the gate for me.

The last map picture is where I came out

I guess I am an off-roader now. No getting rid of those scratches. The old girl finally earned the rock sliders and lift at 318,000 mi.

Funny to think that this truck was lowered 3 weeks ago. Picture is next to my buddy's type R

I would like to go off-roading in the woods with mud and there not be a possibility of me falling off the side of a mountain because the border patrol guards do 30 mph up and down that entire trail

My nerves aside, old Tina preformed wonderful. Even on my bald as shit Michelin defenders. She never came out of 1st and 4h. I would have 4l but I couldn't get it to swap over.

@Speed Freek I'm hoping some of the bumps and shit jarred my front suspension enough to break my uca/LCA bolts free if not, I'll have the sawzall

I love it up there. Lots of cool trails to venture on.

That RV park entrance can be a little nerve racking but it's good time. We usually take the way past dog house junction and head towards Donovan. The gate is sometimes closed there too, but luckily theres a path to the right of it that drops off to the street. A slightly lifted truck can clear it.

Like stated above, but did you have fun? :D

    NO.
passing the guards wasn't as bad farther in because it was wider. They were doing something. There was 5 of them posted up in one stretch.

They were all friendly and had no issues with me putt putting it along until I could find a spot to let them pass.

Had I known about the gates and shit, I think I would have been a bit more relaxed. I don't even know how I missed the not-turn to go to the Marron gate. I never went anywhere but straight.

Honestly the most fun I had was when I got back onto the pavement and four-wheel drive disengaged, in my emergency brake wasn't stuck anymore. That highway 94 I think that goes to the casino was hella fun to drive on. That would have been fun to do with my truck was lowered

I think it would have been fine today, my emotions were just high. This day is definitely one of the harder ones for me. The few times I did stop , I got some nice views. It is definitely one of those things where you wish you could be the passenger so you could actually enjoy the views and sightsee. Because there was a lot of beautiful spots. I just didn't have time to stop at admire.

And I am here until the 20th. I'm flying home next weekend to bring my kitten back to the wife. I'll be back after that

I think it would have been better had one of my coworkers been along who've been up there.

Life's about experiences. And thats one that's not my thing lol.

It wasn't as bad when I was told to turn around and go to a different gate. I had a bit more confidence. When I got to another locked gate though, I was about ready to drive through the barbwire fencing

Maybe I'll do it again if I'm ever in the area.

One of the things I like to do is find places in old photos and try to find them.

Well now the suspension is mostly done.

Could anyone recommend me to a shop to lower the clip one notch on my 6112s, and do an alignment?

We went from 8/6 to 10/8. Pre measurements(inch )from the deck to the arch were D36,P35.75.
    Post are D38,P37.25.

There is only a .7in difference between the two clips. So why such a drastic difference?

Either way,id like to get it dropped down a clip, and then aligned so I can get tires before I head back east

    Edit

Also, does anyone know where I can get some 255/85r16s? For cheaper than $300 a tire

@Speed Freek could do it but you would still need an alignment. the Truck shop off Miramar Rd can do both but are a bit more spendy.

For tires the places advertising on offerup will sell you used tires if you are super price conscious, otherwise costco or discount is your best bet

I just left him told me he never wants to see my rusty shitbox again

Nah, he was awesome about it. Very reasonably priced for the work.

I have access to the equipment to do it on base, but it'll cost me minimum $40, plus lift time, and tool rental. I'm looking at probably $120 minimum to swap it out on my own. So if the truck shop comes close to that, plus the cost of the alignment, works for me .

And it's not so much price conscience, I just I've never spent $1,200 on a set of tires before.

It seems like a laptop purchase, not a phone purchase

He probably should have after he did my U joints, and then I came back for pretty much a complete front end rebuild

wonderful guy. Honest too. The world needs more mechanics like him.
