Currently and for the foreseeable future there is no doubt that Solidworks is the industry standard and most common. Solidworks has put itself in in a lot of schools and training programs to ensure that a lot of people are familiar with it which engourages employers to use it as well so they have a larger talent pool to pick from. Because there are more potential employers using Solidworks, this results in more employment opportunities.
Solidworks also has a similar interface to more specialized software like Catia or Pro-e which may be preferred by primes like Boeing etc. should you choose that path the transition will be easier as well. Just my .02 from what I see from the last 20 years in the defense and aerospace industry. Hope this helps.

Tyler is 100% right! In addition the plugins for Solidworks, or the analyses tools are absolutely amazing, I use them daily to run simulations for fatigue, flexural as well as thermodynamic testing and is where solidworks edges out from of some of the other 3-d modeling programs. I can't think of any technology industry that would not recognize Solidworks training in a potential employee.

ok, that's cool that you can run fatigue simulation.
    thanks again Mr. Eric.
thanks for the info Tyler, i just realized that there is absolutely no market for this in our area of MISS. we do have a GE plant but that's 2 hours north of us, i believe it builds airplane turbines.
i'll have to look into it, thanks.
license? do you have to renew after a certain amount of time? or just buy another program?

Having a skill like that in an area that is void of such education/ experience could pay off big.

true, maybe i could take a welding course, and a CAD course.
then i can work part time as a welder, while i'm looking for a CAD job.

    these options are killing me.

Off topic question here... Are there any radio freq. you monitor regularly? ie: law enforcement, ems/fire. I'm trying to program some channels into my radio so I can listen in on the action. Right now I'm tuned into 151.350 sounds like a fire rescue channel lots of air tac codes and jargon. Something's going on down in cedar creek sounds like an airlift or something also a fire out in some avocado grove. Radios are fun! :D
