yeah and that would be your entrance point, otherwise the rest of system is under pressure so nothing gets in. However, there supposed to be filter so I can see water getting in but sand should get filtered. You can remove that filter and see if there are any water marks in it, but that could have happened when you power washed the truck (was it running when you did that ?)
I saw your pictures, did wave came from driver side ? if it did maybe all you need to do is cleanup Fuel pump plug and reset codes., have you check that ?

    It hit from the pass.

I didn't check it but the tech did. He initially thought it was water damage and spent 3 days chasing circuits but it all tested fine.

Update : (it's really hard to care for your patients when you're pissed.)

Toyota denied my claim. Again. Said there's "external circumstances" but can't seem to explain or tell me what and why. I demanded to see the fuel tank dropped and filtered in front of me, and the lady, who was Very apologetic offered to call my dealership.

Through some magic wand my insurance is covering the damages, but the adjuster and the shop have a disagreement on labor costs... a 4k dollar disagreement.

The dealer has ordered my parts today and will continue hashing it out with my insurance company, but will start working once we get parts.

Not how I wanted it to go down, as Toyota hasn't admitted fault and is ignoring the initial issue of how sand entered, and why the filter is inadequate.

    Oh well...

This pic looks really good. Like something you would see in a Tacoma brochure, although they probably wouldn't put this pic in with the topper. =)

Talk to your adjustor's supervisor. Insurance companies have lawyers in house to go to court over things like this. See if you can't push them to have a lawyer review the claim and see if they have a case. If they do, they sue and you aren't out the lawyer fees and hopefully Toyota is forced to stand behind their product. I think the dealership is the ones being shady, being named in the lawsuit might make them rethink the cause.

This is all the dealership's service managers word, Toyota does everything based on what they say. They can lie out their teeth, unless you can prove it, Toyota takes their side.

The military teaches you to "embrace" the suck. As much as this sucks, it's small in the grand scheme of things.

I am missing the Tacoma meet at Pismo Beach this weekend though...

This 100%. Seriously man, this is the dealer being super shady and not wanting to pay up for the truck. Don't just take this shit, you did nothing wrong here. Regardless if the fuckin wave crested over the truck, you're not gonna get sand in your fuel system. AND if you had, you would have noticed it immediately, not the next day when you're at a car wash, That is fuckin bullshit. The dealership either knows whats up and doesn't want to pay for it, or can't figure it out and doesn't want to look dumb in front of corporate Toyota.

Fuck that. This ain't the military, this is a shady dealer trying to get out of paying for something.

Seriously. What do they have? "We found some sand in the tank, but have no proof other than that's what our tech said after working on it for a week. We found some sand in the fuel system and engine but have no proof because sand obviously dissolves in fuel. Oh wait, it's not that it dissolves in fuel since we can't prove that, but that it will dissolve inside the engine because of the high heat and pressure. However, we still have no proof of sand in any of the fuel system, but because we said so, that's what it is. NOW PAY US"

    Lawyer up asap.

If the sand did enter the system somehow without going through the filter in the tank wouldn't it be stuck in the small strainers in the injectors. They should, if sand is the issue be able to pull the 6 injectors and show you the sand. I don't buy the sand dissolved BS that they are slinging.

That's what I've been saying from the start! The dealer doesn't seem to think providing any proof is needed. Apparently wild claims gets you paid in the dealership world these days.

I fully agree with you guys. However I legitimately cannot afford legal fees right now, and my 14 hr shifts don't leave me much time to sit with a lawyer :(

Sorry that Toyota can't take care of a good customer. I would take the time get a lawyer, that way an independant shop can either verify or dispute the "sand" issue. Even if a full cup of sand was dumped in there, this should not have happened. even if the vehicle is submerged up to the wheel wells there shouldn't be enough water intrusion into the system to cause this.

    found this(mm):
    Boulder Boulders 250-100
    Gravel Cobbles 65-250
    Prebbles 4-65
    Granules 2-4
    Sand Very coarse sand 1-2
    Coarse sand 0.5-1
    Medium sand 0.25-0.5
    Fine sand 0.125-0.25
    Very fine sand 0.0625-0.125
    Mud Coarse silt 0.031-0.0625
    Medium silt 0.0156-0.031
    Fine silt 0.0078-0.0156
    Very fine silt 0.0039-0.0078
    Clay <0.0039
    Dust <0.0005

anyone know the sock used in the tank, what is the filter "pass though" size? How about the strainer size in the injectors?
