Just WOW!!! Dude you've been through the ringer! I read this entire thread and I'm still shaking my head. I want to purchase one of these, but this thread I can't get out of my head. I'm anxtiously waiting your next post to see what Toyota says now. It seems obvious to me this is a harness problem. Hopefully you didn't install any after market devices that would interfere with the electrical in anyway. I was in transportation 29 yrs. & this scenario reminds me of a bus we once purchased. None of us could figure it out. It was under warranty at the time when for no apparent reason it would shut down. And usually at the worst times, when fully loaded. We would send it to the dealer they couldn't find anything wrong & would send it back to us. Finally the last time it happened I phoned them to send a hook. They finally duplicated the problem (long after the warranty expired) & stated it was on the engine side. Then it went to CAT & after a couple of months CAT came back & said it was on the chassis side. Long story short the dealer replaced the harness & case closed. The electronics these days are amazing when they work but can be hell especially if the techs aren't fully up to date. I've watched some of the youtube videos of 1st gen toyotas crossing rivers and I wonder if these new ones would even come close to the abuse the old ones took. I also agree with you, very deceptive marketing! Also, what no fuel filter?! Gosh, you would think for 40k a replaceable fuel filter would be a must. All I can say is don't take it to Mexico! Some of the fuel down there can be questionable at best. I will share this thread with as many people as i can. Good luck man & we appreciate your service. - God bless

Im going to let the dealer run their diagnostics and see what they come up with. I have another case open with corporate that I need to follow up on, and will ask to open another case on the fuel system again, and have them reference the 3 closed cases from earlier.

The shop foreman is taking the truck, as the mechanic who worked on my truck previously has moved dealers.

Dealer came through with a loaner.
2016 sr5 4runner. 200 Miles. It was this, a tundra, a Prius or Highlander. I really wanted the Tundra but opted for this for engine comparison.

After 10 miles.. (more like 10 seconds pulling out of parking lot) the 270 HP 4.0 in the 4runner is better in every single way possible. I was holding out that the 3.5 wasn't bad, and almost believed it... Until I drove this. Even with very heavy lead foot and not being broken in, it's getting 18 mpgs... My taco can't touch that.

It has trac bars and disk brakes, 5 plug ins, USB, and power inverter. Back seats are bigger and more comfy, and they recline!

Toyota, if you're reading this, please put the 4.0 back into Tacoma. PLEASE!

Now about my truck, it's presenting the same as it did before with the initial problem, the techs are digging into it today. I'm getting the "covered by warranty unless we find *insert sand intrusion reference* " lines again...

    Let's see....

Yes, it would have been nice to get the improved 4.0 instead of the 3.5. I think we can blame CAFE for that.

    Good Luck!

Tell me about it, everytime I drive our 2016 4Runner, it makes me realize how bad the 3.5 and tranny in the Tacoma feels

The 4R is getting better mileage than my taco!

I am seriously considering trading for a 4R pro...

But. I love having a bed and a stick...

I have been pondering the same thing. Just can't give up my stick. If the 4r pro came with a stick, we'll just take my money

I would give up my Tacoma for a manual 4Runner as well.
