i got absolutely sandblasted by a passing gravel truck. Hundreds of little cups in my formerly pristine windshield.

I've read lots of threads on AG- the concensus is lots of hours polishing with glass-specific products and even then, it might not improve.

Would there be any harm in hitting my windshield with paint compound? Just so I can feel like I made an attempt? I thought even if it doesn't correct, maybe it'd knock the edges down off some of the chips. Or am I risking further damage?

I think you can. It's the same steps as a paint correction step so wash and clay bar first.
Obviously it just depends on how bad the damage is. You can't polish off a 0.25mm of glass haha.

I hope you can get it fixed. If you try please let us know how it goes. I'd be very interested to see if it works so I can use it in the future if need be.

Also, did you get the name of the company on the truck? If they were not using the legal requirements for a lid or tarp then if it were me, I'd be calling up that company asking for them to make it right.

Yep, I'm gonna give it a go. The pits aren't deep at all. There's just a lot of them. I got some Car-pro Ceri-glass polish and their DA rayon pads in 3" and 5". I did a ton of reading on AG about using the combo. It sounds like pits are a losing battle so I'm not expecting anything magical. We will see. Haha I just have to try.

    all tore up already
one of the many products dealers use is called "diamond fusion" no idea how well it would work for you, we used it on new windshields as a permanent rain-x, but may work for you depending on how minor chips are. just be sure to wear gloves.. maybe a couple pairshttp://www.surfaceshield.com/windshields.htm
