Is the clear coat still there? Often when sap bakes on, it etches the clear coat.

Friend of mine parked his new, and I mean brand new Toyota Hybrid RAV4 under a tree for a spell and it is royally f*cked.

We tried all manner of cleaning it up but it wouldn't come off.

He could care less, but I was aghast ...

You need a professional ceramic coating to prevent those sap stains, or bird poop ruining the finish on these trucks. My truck gets covered with both. Some warm water and a rag usually takes them right off with no ill effects. I recently had a good layer of baked on bird poop i'd been ignoring. I finally removed it with some extra elbow grease. Didn't see any imperfection s in the finish after over 2 1/2 years. That stuff simoniz used is amazing.

3" lift on 33 inch Nitto's with 18" Fuel wheels. N-Fab step bars. Husky floor liners.
Gel hand sanitizer works on those drops of sap. Put just enough to cover the sap and let it set a few minutes then wipe it off. Might take a few times depending on how thick it is. I keep a little bottle in my truck just for that.

Send some pics. I know exactly what you're talking about here. Buffing the paint should remove the stains, but it's ideal to try other methods before cutting into the clear coat.

alcohol, goo gone, polish, road tar remover, acetone, clay bar. lots of options. i'd probably try some some alcohol or clay bar first.

my coworker got bleach or some other caustic chemical on his gloves and i had a dull area of paint on my door. where he touched it nothing would get it out so i used a tiny bit of polish and it removed it in 10 seconds.

Everyone has a smart phone, you should post some pictures of the "damage"

I would buy some buffing pads if you have a household drill (surprisingly, these do the job if you know how to buff)
Amazon.com: Car Foam Drill Polishing Pad Kit 22 PCS, 3 Inch Buffing Pads : Automotive

Watch youtube videos on how to buff. That is important. Utilize some Compound (griots garage) from AutoZone (this specifically is noobie friendly as it stays "wet" so you don't burn the paint).

on the first rain of the year redwood trees drop a staining dust on the cars and if it gets wet you cant get the stains out... It has happened to me twice on white cars and both times my detailer was able to get it out with a clay bar and a typical exterior detailing, although I am sure he works some magic on it... Just send it to the detailer or try some clay bar yourself and some type of clear coat paint correction and polish.

I would try to get a professional detail person to tackle it. If it etched into the clear it may be a matter of how deep before you need some form of refinish. Start with the least invasive, and get a professional. Why guess and take chances when not sure what to do when a reputable and knowledgeable detailer may have seen and dealt with it before.
