On way home from Doctor Appointment this later model silver 2nd Gen. pulled up along side me at a stop light had the TRD Bead Lock Wheel and VIGO on door just below the mirror Decal on Bed said TXPro TRD, Got behind it a next light tailgate badges said is small letter Toyota and below that in larger letter HILUX VIGO with V6 in lower right corner of Tailgate. It was a 4X$ Personalized Plate Black/yellow TY and number and TACO think the number was year of truck TY might have be country of origin. Could have been a military person that brought it home was left had drive. Young Asian Female driving. Will get picture next time I see it. Probably lives in area. Did a little research look like it was 7th Gen. 4 door truck possible from Thailand thus the TY TACO on the plate. Also ISIS like them along with other militants.

Ever spend anytime outside of the US? Did it 'look' like a 2nd gen Tacoma? Then it was not a Hilux.

Hilux are all over Mexico, when we go to Port Aventura, MX, both Hilux and Tacoma's are everywhere.

A Hilux looks like a Tacoma with a 'smooshed' face and bad face job, lol! Trust me, they stick out!

Probably, 30 mins spent debadging, $100 spent on badges, 30 mins spents re-badging.

But, if it does have the fuq'd up face job...

it's Still possible, someone brought one up from MX!

Hell, in my RX modding days, someone showed up with a Toyota Harrier. So anything is possible, but prob... re-badge.

No pics on this thread, so here’s one of them that I saw while on vacation here in Manila. This is the Hilux equivalent of the 2018 TRD Pro. It’s $1.5 Million PHP, or about $28,000 USD. Very cheap compared to how much a Tacoma TRD Pro costs. This has the D4D Factory Intercooled Turbodiesel in it. Makes about 147 HP at 3,400 RPM, and 400 lb/ft of torque at 1600 RPM.

So many brand new Ford Rangers here too, and they’re massive. Looks like Ford released the re-design in foreign markets first before releasing it to the USDM.

Here’s a late 90’s Hilux. They’re all four door Turbodiesels. The body style is like the the 1st Gen Tacoma and the Final Gen Pickup had a baby.

Wow, never seen a Hilux like that! Either 8th gen with package or is there a ninth gen????

Hilux always have looked horrible, that looks awsome!

Lol... Manilla... exchange rate... I have a friend on one of the islands in PH who has a couple of local businesses, one of which is 'pawn shop' type loan operation. His main business is located in the US, so with exchange rate vs locals ave yearly income being below US poverty levels, he has aquired so many vehicles on loans, he had to buy a garage. Lol! It's sad, those people save ALL THERE LIVES to buy a motocycle, much less a car or truck, run into a problem and will put them up as collateral for like $2,000 - $5,000 in US cash!

This one looked like a normal Tacoma double cab except the badging and decal. The Personalized plate led me to believe it might be from Thailand, as it read TY Taco. The driver was an Asian Female and she or who ever in her family is an employee of my forme employer. I will find out. I didn't get that good a look and the front end but will be on the look out for it.

This one looked like a regular Taco until I got behind and saw the Tailgate badging, did't notice thing funny on the front either. Could have been a serviceman who ordered a US spec truck while in Thailand to drive over there, save tax and all the good stuff, then when he shipped out had the trucked shipped her. It could have been rebadged over there for some reason. My Son did while in England

Can pretty much guarantee you DIDNT see a Hilux.

It's extremely expensive to bring one over. The chicken tax alone is 25%.

Stop with the fake news OP!

It was probably rebadged. Personally, the TACOMA and HILUX look nothing alike from any angle, 2 totally different trucks. :)

When you buy a car while in the military the ship it home for with all the rest of your household stuff if your not living in barracks. I live in the area and I know who the employer is so if I see it again i get a picture and have them pull over ask them what the story is. Someone connected with the truck work for my former employer. But for privacy and safety I can't say with out their permission nor will I attempt to track them down.

Maybe? Are you near a base? It's highly unlikely that it's been officially imported, but it could be he temporarily....Kinda like the overlanders that drive/ship their US registered vehicles to South America or drive across the border into Mexico.

The two things that would make me think this:

    * Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure you can only officially import if it's a model that is actually sold in the US, well, because the Skylines and Defenders that you hear about customs crushing. I know a friend of ours brought a BMW Germany and the Air Force handled the shipping, but it was a model available in the US

*I've seen newer (not so importable) Defender running on the base, but it has current European tags.

Dunno, but I doubt it was an officially imported Hilux.

You can import with proper papers and you have to show that the vehicle has been setup to meet all US regs. which can be $$$$$. You have to weigh the cost benefit, I had an uncle who used to deal in 'grey market' Mercedes, and there was a profit to be made in that situation. But each vehicle is different. Personally, I don't see how importing a Hilux woukd make financial since, unless you really liked them or wanted a diesle.

I wonder if you bought a Hilux overseas, you could register it in New Mexico? Evidently you can in Michigan.
