The left is the speed you are going, the range is the acceptable speed your speedo can read.
The acceptable tolerance is for the speedo to read faster than you are actually going, so if you are going 65 and it reads 70 you wouldn't be speeding to get a ticket. If your speedo reads slower than actual speed and your vehicle is stock, it has to be fixed per NHTSA.

actual speed 65- speedo reading over 65=acceptable, you would be going slower than you think
actual speed 65- speedo reading under 65=unacceptable, you would be going faster than you think ie. ticket

8-10% error is the acceptable range, but I can't find the link for it again.

    BONE STOCK for now
Checked mine against a GPS today and was shocked to find 70mph on the speedo was really only 64 mph, that's off buy 6 MPH...WTH?

The really wierd part is that it appears to be non-linear, at 40mph indicated the actual speed was 37mph :der:

Oh, and this was with the stock tires and wheels.

Surely the Engineering geeks at Toyota can do better than that :der:

Yup, I verified my stock 09 4.0 DC this weekend. GPS had me doing 70mph but the speedo read 74mph. Keeps me slower than I'm actually going.

Now I just need to forget that I figured this out :lalala:

Appears to be an 8% error at both speeds. Why is this nonlinear?

BTW mine reads high by approx 5%.

My speedo reads about 2-3 mph faster than actual speed, verified by both GPS and those radar signs. However, if i start a trip log with my GPS and reset the ODO, the readings are within a few tenths of a mile over 100 miles or so.

Picked up my 09 Tacoma Prerunner TRD DB cab last week.
Noticed Speedometer was reading fast. Tested it with a GPS and a laser gun.
At 60 mph speedo reads 63.
Had to take the truck back to get XM installed, when I asked dealer about the error he showed me the same chart that is posted elsewhere in this thread. When I asked if I could install a calibrator to correct the error, I was told that it would void the Warranty.
Just figured i would pass this along if you have a truck in warranty.

They will tell you that sneezing voids the warranty...They have to find it/know it was there and it has to be related to the failure.

I think we've said in this thread that the ODO racks up miles correctly...so they can't even claim that you calibrator made the mileage wrong...unless I misunderstand something.

I wouldn't worry about it- if the difference bothers you enough- throw the cal box on there.

So I assume that Toyota does not offer different tooth speedometer gears like other companies do.

I have an 09 AC with the same problem. When mine reads 80 I am doing 73 (according to 2 different GPS units). When I am doing 45 I am actually going 38 (according to GPS and mobile radar stations). I forget everytime I go to the stealership to tell them.

If you read the whole thread- you would see that it is like 95% likely that they will tell you it's the way it is and that'll be it. They might test it and maybe swap out the speedo unit, but there will still be some error.

Well I have the same problem in that my Speedo reads faster than what I'm doing. At 70MPH on the Speedo I'm doing 65MPH. Had the same response for the dealer, it's within spec and we can't do nothing to fix it.

It's a plot to make everyone drive slower.

It's a plot to make sure they don't get sued when someone gets a speeding ticket and the tolerances are a matter of law I believe. If they don't HAVE to make it that precise- why spend the money to do it??

I think you'll find everyone has some error...not based on rim size.

I had an 06 Civic. It was off too. Someone brought a class action lawsuit basically on the grounds that the warranty would run out before actual 36K miles driven. The final judgment added a couple of thousand miles to the warranty.

IMO it basically is false advertisment b/c it makes the MPG look higher.

    Just a FYI.
