I agree that 6% error on the speedo is not acceptable to me, nor is the 3.5 % on the odometer on mine. With today's technology, built into the Tacomas, there is no excuse for that much error. It's not rocket science.

Yeah, I mean, I can live with it--Not that big of an issue. I guess I was just surprised that a variation of 6% is so widely acceptable.:( I'll be adjusting my expectations. Thanks guys.

And I thought I was crazy. My 09 is off too. Both my GPS and my radar detector which displays your speed both show that my speedo is reading about 3mph higher than I'm actually going.

    10% of what? If it reads 2mph and you're going 6, it's off by 200%. At 51 v 55 it's about 8%. If you get up to 120, we're around 3%.

Last I heard, 7mph or less inaccuracy was considered "within limits".

No. They are based on digital signals from sensors, and produce a pulse train that's frequency varies based on speed. This is very resistant to false readings from high-resistance connections, but intermittent connections (short or open) can cause false readings.

If you have a scangauge, you can see what the vehicle computer sees as the speed. In my case, the scangauge and a GPS unit agree very well--within about 1 mph. My dash gauge reads about 5% faster than the actual speed the vehicle is going. So at a true 70 mph, my speedometer reads about 73.5.

Good enough. One of these days I'll check to see whether the odometer increments with the gauge reading or the computer reading.

Well just to add to the thread, my speedo is off too.

    I'm off by about 5-6 km/hrs at 100 km/hrs, so that gives us 5-6%.

Also, if I compare my odometer and distance traveled with a route given by my gps, following exactly this route, I get about 3-4% more on my odometer.

I think guys that you got on the WRONG subject here in this thread because the REAL IMPORTANT THING here is your odometer, and I think our odometer are as off as our speedometers. Think of all it can affect... (warranty, resale value, calculated mpg, etc.)
