What oil temp is the pan and converter?

    A/T oil Temp 1

    A/T oil Temp 2

I just got my truck back from the trans shop and put in my scan gauge today also.

On my SG II, temp 1 is the pan and temp 2 is the converter. I would think it would be the same for the SG III. Have you tried contacting their customer service?

The temp that jumps around is the converter. The more stable temp is the pan.

Bingo, that's the best way to figure it out.

Hey Blackbird, so I’m 99% sure on this but figure I should ask you for complete peace of mind. When towing, I pay attention to both readings, pan and torque but the pan is the important one correct, in regards to whether or not your transmission is in the safe zone or overheating when towing? And on that note, what is the purpose of the torque converter temp reading? Thanks!

*Maybe I’m way off and need a school lesson, either way, it’s much appreciated.

That's the primary one I pay attention to, the pan. On my tundra I will float around 185 due to my truck having a trans thermostat, but I've seen the torque converter spike as high as 230 on a long, steep climb. As soon as the torque converter locks back up, the temp will rapidly drop and remain a constant with the pan temp.

Yup, what Randy said. I would assume there is some upper limit for the TC temp as well, otherwise I doubt they would have added a sensor for it. But I have no idea what that value is.

I actually monitor the TC temp value in my truck. When its locked its very close to the pan temp, when unlocked I can watch how fast / far it rises. But generally speaking I don't worry about it too much. There aren't many grades big enough out here in New England to worry about.

They are both important. Trans fluid is happiest around 170F. Fluid that spends time above 170F is being damaged according to time at temperature. Use the TC as a leading indicator of pan temp. You can easily have a 50F difference between the two. When you see the temps diverging look to down shift. You'll be amazed at how fast shifting into 4 will bring your TC temp back toward the bulk pan temp.

If I see TC temp spiking, for instance on a long highway uphill grade, I shift to 4th. Keeps temps down.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. Would you mind sharing the X codes for these?

Thank you. I probably haven't failed enough yet. I've entered so many codes and haven't gotten a single one to work from that site. Haha! The one I got working came from one of our fellow TW members on another thread.

I wonder if codes differ from one version of a Tacoma to another.

Have you updated your scan gauge three. There’s a couple of software updates.

Mine came up in the auto scan. I got both the trans temp in the pan and the torque converter. I did not have to enter any codes

I did update. Can't remember if I checked again after the update, though. Will try again today.

I read somewhere, though, that the transmission fluid temp. is not available for manual transmissions ('cause they do not need it, apparently).

from my understanding, there’s no temperature sensor in the manual transmissions so the computer is not gonna read it if it’s not there to read

I think this is turning out to be an accurate statement the more I come accross it and the more I try entering codes for it. I officially give up on TFT for my Tacoma. Haha! I'll settle for coolant temp., at least I am getting that.

Any idea if engine temp. is available for us manuals?

There is no temp sensor for the gear oil in manual trans. trucks.

    Engine temp = Coolant temp

Thank you for enlightening me! Looks like I'm happy with what's on my display at the moment.

Next up... I'll have to see how accurate fuel consumption monitoring is on this thing.
