Just in case anyone wonders there IS codes for accessing the atf fluid temp with the scan gauge that works on 1st gens. I had read the 99 model didn’t have a sensor because the idiot light on my dash does not light up. However after using the numbers it does show the temp. Not sure what years this covers exactly but it’s worth a shot to try if you have a scan gauge.

Thanks for posting! I had to search for at least an hour to find it buried in other forums. Scangauge doesn’t even have these posted on their site from what I can remember

I believe I tried this exact code on my 1998 and it didn’t work. Something changed in 1999 that allowed the transmission to report temperature to the ECU.

That may be true. I didn’t think mine would work either honestly.

I have an UltraGauge in my 2000, and there is no item on the menu for ATF Temperature.

ATF temperature being read by Scanguage II has been working perfect in my 2004 for 6 months now. It makes me want an external tranny cooler though.

I discovered this over a year ago and have been happily monitoring ATF temps since. Can confirm it works. What's fun to see is the temp drop quickly once up to highway speeds, tanks to the additional ATF cooler I installed right behind the grille. Also installed a remote ATF filter. ATF flows out from the factory cooler but instead of going right back into the trans, it then goes into my secondary cooler, and once coming out of there goes through the filter I installed before re-entering the trans. Both from Derale Performance. Very happy with their products and customer support.

Depends on driving style and other factors. On average, if I’m not driving assertively, my ATF is usually around 140-150. Highest I’ve seen it BEFORE adding my additional cooler and filter (plus whatever small overall fluid capacity gain there was) I was temps almost as high as the coolant temps. ~190, which I thought was unacceptable.

I have a manual transmission but have the scangauge II monitoring transmission fluid temps on my daily driver.

So far with the cooler weather mines been around 130 to 150.. highest was 170ish in traffic just for a short time. Im slowly replacing fluid via drain refills as i can only manage to get 2 quarts per drain.

Those are pretty cool temps. Mine runs anywhere from 140-200, depending on conditions. Highest I've seen it is 222 when I was climbing a mountain pass loaded down with the trans in 2nd. Planning on installing a cooler because 220ish is definitely too high in my book.

Also, you should be getting 4-5 quarts just from draining the plug on the pan, not 2.

Whoops, missed that you're a prerunner. The a340e has a smaller pan than the a340f so you would be getting less fluid out. If you're not already, pull the front end up on ramps so the front end is higher, you'll get more fluid out that way.

After cooler around 160 is average. I've noticed engine braking very quickly and dramatically raises temps.

Post #9, I like the filter! Should add it to my aftermarket cooler.
On my 1977 Celica years ago I modified the oil pan.
Drill a hole about an inch up from the bottom of the pan.
Buy a Toyota water temp sender.
Find a nut to fit the temp sender.
Weld the nut in the oil (trans pan.)
Connect the sender to an additional gauge. OR.... connect a switch to both gauges.
When flipped in one direction it reads engine temp. When flipped the other way it reads oil temp.

I did a long drive in my 04 Double Cab today, about 80 miles mix of city and highway, and I saw temps as high as 222 degrees. Makes me think an external cooler may be my next upgrade. My truck is stock except for a Champion 3 row 4Runner radiator.
