Scan Gauge III & Progressive Insurance Snap Shot Dongle…

First, I made several searches for posts that might address this topic, and had no luck. If anyone else finds something here, please share. Thanks!

Been thinking about picking up a Scan Gauge III. I’ve also sold my soul, and will soon be receiving the Snap Shot dongle from Progressive Auto Insurance, mostly because my kid had an accident and my wife likes to speed…those are different discussions though.

Realizing that both of these devices are utilizing OBDII, which would mean I’d need 2 devices connected simultaneously to a single port. I’m wondering if picking up an OBDII splitter would solve the single port issue. I would guess that as long as the Scan Gauge is used for monitoring only, then both devices would essentially be passive, and would only read the data available? That’s just a guess though. Not sure what the specifics of OBDII entail as far as protocol handshaking, check sums, blah, blah, blah. I’ve seen several articles and posts elsewhere that are contradictory, regarding the nature of OBDII, which is why I thought I’d ask here.

IIRC ScanGauge says do not use a splitter.
