Been doing some exploring lately, found some dirt roads with hunter access in Vernon the other day. Also followed some power lines around sterling forest but got dead ended into a river crossing.

Just putting it out there. Dec and park police patrols sterling forest pretty heavily. The only legal roads are the hunter access roads. Any power line trail is illegal

edit: turkey season started May 1st. That’s probably why the access roads are open. But if you do go explore or hike around. Wear bright colors. Around this time, there’s a lot of city folk that tend to shoot at noise.

    Dirt bike riding in Rockland:
~One time on some trail mebbe Mt. Ivy area(?) that took us up atop to Hudson River views.
~Off Rt. 202 was Kakiak park, a nature trail but behind was some rocky wash road.
~Mahwah, NJ had a small reservation (Ramapough tribal land) & had nice trails, we rode in from the woods of Suffern, NY.

I haven't been there in a while but the rat race from the city took over the trails :(

Yeah, I understand any power line trail is illegal. (only been dipping my big toe in that pool, don't want to get caught or stuck during the pandemic) Did not know it was turkey season, best to get out the blaze orange. I've been trying to figure out the access points for the Stag Hill area. After years of people wheeling around there, the local powers have been putting the kibosh on it as of late. Lots of barricades. People use to wheel behind the Sheraton in Mahwah, don't know if it's still accessible, might try exploring this week.

I have been hearing about some places in west Morris/southeastern Sussex counties. Lots of ATV trails, the trick is finding ones the tacos can fit down. Around the lake Hopatcong area and west to the gap.

Maybe it's just better to wait and go to the Pine Barrens and stop messing around with illegal areas around northern NJ.

There’s a couple different secret enterances. Iv heard a lot of stories about people’s trucks getting vandalized. Or robbed by the locals. Iv heard about spike strips hidden in the trails, again by the locals. Which is a real shame because there’s some great trails back there. Most of the jeep groups in rockland stopped going there

I'm nearby and have been considering heading north to some of the NYS forests. Not sure how the closer ones are as far as roads/trails- Stewart Forest, Minnewaska Preserve, Big Indian, Slide Mountain, Willoweomoc (I think fishing there, too). Hopefully I'll get to explore soon.

Stewart Forest is mostly hiking & biking trails. No motorized vehicles allowed. Hunting for turkey/deer shuts down to public. 2 Parking lots off Rt. 207 & Rt. 17k.

Minnewaska Preserve; Locals call it Lake Minnewaska. Lots of entry points via parking lots (for a fee) off Rt. 44-55. For hiking, biking, climbing/scaling cliffs by ropes or free radical. Swimming in clear water lakes on top. No motorized vehicles allowed.

Big Indian & Slide Mountain are "wilderness areas" for hiking & camping. We do have Big Indian as some backwood town on Rt. 28. I think access to Slide Mt. is on Rt. 14.

Willoweomoc River is famous for the 2 headed trout lore & a museum dedicated to fly fishing. Rumor that the Roscoe Diner has the 2 headed trout on display. Never been out there yet.

Have fun Upstate, watch out for the dreaded ticks.

I’m also in North NJ if anyone wants to get together some time soon. I’m not crazy heavily modified so it’ll be lighter trails for me

I have been scheming on exploring Willoweomoc and Big Indian as well, looks like some forest service roads.
I just read a post on some Jeep forum about “trails end rd” in Rochester NY, Ulster County. Don’t know any more info than that. But from a google map search it looks promising.

I’m down for some light-moderate Off-roading. I’m around Mahwah and know of a couple spots.
