How about a holder like this but on its side?

I looked at that one , I'm leaning towards having an aluminum " box " made that fits the outside dimensions of the MFC with a lockable lid

Interesting but I like the idea of a box because it would deter siphoning and the resulting spillage as well as reduce the solar exposure to the can , and if I made it as a rectangle it could serve as a gear tote when I didn't need to carry the extra fuel

Oh I see. I would be curious if the box would hold in fumes, and cause an issue. Could always have a drain hole or mesh bottom or something.

I don't think there will be any issue with fumes , I used to keep a Scepter in my cap all the time and never once could I smell gas back there , they just don't leak

I really like that.. even though it's not the side you want the cans on that's a nifty setup

lol good point. Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to use mine all that often, and the time I end up going to get gas its for other people, with cheaper gas tanks.

I could smell the fumes in the cab :p

Those all look like Scepters too , just the leaky type of consumer cans :)

    Scepter's response to my email ;

    Hello Peter,

Thank you for your email inquiry. There is no reason why you cannot mount the MFC on either of its sides - either flat on the markings or on it's edge.

When you have your mount fabricated, could you send us a picture of the cans mounted on your vehicle? We always enjoy seeing users' vehicles with our cans.

I had that exact fuel can holder. It weighs 25 lbs unloaded if I remember right. All steel construction, way too much weight for my tastes. I ended up using loading straps for my applications.

I'm curious to see what Oz settles on. :)

I'm leaning towards a lidded aluminum box approx 18"x 20"x 7 1/2" , with a partition inside for the Scepter filler nozzle and a MFC wrench

Hey you know what stores really cleanly flat on a flat surface Pete?

    Yea, but they suck...IMHO.

The bolts shear off and drop the cans on the trail (hope someone sees it fall off). The cans explode when hot and shoot off the caps (so dangerous it's not even funny).

I will say the only time I was running VERY low on gas one did save my ass, but it's owner is not impressed with them nor am I after seeing their issues.

Interesting, hadn't heard any of that before. Mine have been going strong for a year now. Bolts are still in great shape and no explosions to date.

I equally hate all gas cans. They all suck. My next fuel transport system will be an Atwood 6-gallon boat tank strapped to the roof rack. It's low profile, durable and vents. I will use a super siphon to transfer fuel. Fast, clean, and easy. I know an FJ owner who went even a step further and sprung for a 12-gallon model with a portable 12v pump all straps to roof rack. When done with a trip, it unstraps from roof and goes right on a shelf in the garage.

Could be your colder climate not causing expansion issues :notsure:

The bolts shearing is what it is. Full tanks of gas on semi bouncy trail and their factory mounting hardware just sheared in half. I'm talking 20-30mph on fire roads not LT trucks jumping dunes. They replaced the hardware, but still.... lucky to have even found the cans that fell off.

I don't know anyone that has them and hasn't had serious issues with them.

Personally I think most of these tanks are driven around empty and never used.

I just did a search and no issues are posted about them

How the heck can the only people I know had issues with them and no one else has?

Oh shit..... they are from NJ. Hmmmm......... could be another factor in this
