OP Glad you are ok, Looks like the punk kids Dad may be in line to write some checks, I would be willing to bet the car is in Mom or Dads name. I would go after everyone. I am not as forgiving as I used to be now that I am on a pension.

In Florida he is lucky he guy had insurance. When I lived there 90% of the population bought insurance to register the car and canceled it as soon as the plates went on.

In NY you can’t cancle a policy without a receipt from the DMV proving you turned the plates in. Of course you can stop paying and the insurance company reports the coverage lapse to the state.

Same here in Vegas, the minute you cancel your insurance or don't pay it,the insurance company lets DMV know and they cancel your car registration same day.

Not anymore. Florida law requires insurance companies to notify the state when a policy is cancelled or not renewed. The state then sends you a 10 day notice to show your new policy. After 10 days they suspend your DL and puts a seize tag order on the car.

Same here in Cali. I was 2 days late paying the insurance on my bike earlier this year, DMV was quick to yank the reg until they got proof from the insurance company that I was in good standing.

When the CHP pulls you over, they already know whether or not the vehicle has insurance. But they still ask for proof anyway; one more way for them to generate revenue - giving a ticket if you don't have current proof printed out, in the vehicle.

Sorry this happened to you OP. Hopefully you are made whole, one way or another. You shouldn't have to take it in the shorts for some punk's negligence. Hope you're doing okay otherwise.

Now the DMV is notified electronically of insurance cancellation or lapse, and the vehicle owner will find the FHP knocking on their door. My youngest grandson found this out--the hard way...

Yes, insurance is there to bail us out, up to the amount insured; he’s still liable to you for the property and medical damages. Sue him personally for the rest.

    Update:

My insurance took care of me. It took several weeks of looking but I eventually ended up with a Magnetic Grey 2011 TRD Sport with a 3” lift and 285/70/17 Nitto Terra Grapplers. Got a good deal and the new truck is literally in immaculate condition. I couldn’t find any 4x4s in my price range in decent condition, so it’s another Prerunner. I love it.
