I have been searching around for a cap/topper/camper shell for a while and it is almost impossible to find one that is for my Taco and in the color, etc. The manufactures make it really hard to buy them used. Well, I then decided to broaden my search a bit. I started searching for 05-15 Tacos for sale. I found one with a ARE cap on it, called the dealer and they agreed to sell the cap to me separately.

I found the exact A.R.E. CX Series cap with carpet lining, sliding windows, roof rack, and it even came with the key, for the steal of a price $450. I am so psyched.

I didn't write this to brag (well maybe a little). I wanted to share my idea of looking at whole trucks and asking to separate. Now my dogs can ride comfortably in my access cab. I started building a rear dog bench but this came along. The bench idea wasn't ideal because it covered both my rear jump seats.IMG_0061.jpg IMG_0060.jpg

I found a white one on CL for $450 and rocked it on my MGM truck for a year. Then I found a guy with a white Taco and a black topper - actually, I left a note on his truck in a parking lot. A few months later he called me and asked if I still wanted to trade. Traded straight across.

I'm in poughkeepsie. what dealer did you deal with? was it a new car dealer, or a used lot? I have been searching the net for caps both by themselves and at dealers on trucks. I have emailed almost every dealer in a 100 mile radius that has a silver 6' cap on a truck.
I either don't get responses or they say they want to keep them together.

I did the same exact thing on my ARE CX, most dealers wouldn't sell them separate but finally found one willing. Got mine for 480, sometimes patience pays off.

While I love my BRM, when it came to buying a shell I cursed myself for not getting a more common color. I ended up sucking it up and buying new from Leer, since I don't plan to ditch the truck or the shell anytime soon. Great buy!

Just keep throwin' money at it.
Everyone keep scoring deals and all us DCSB MGMs are sitting here watching prices go up, haha. I think its just a rare canopy. Almost makes me want to have bought a 6' bed. Good score on the canopy! Looks good!

I'm looking for silver. I was asking where, mainly trying to figure out if a used lot works better or a new lot that took in a trade.
I have been searching craigslist daily and have sent emails to tons of dealers and private people about trucks they have

I found that most of the used dealerships I talked to had a bunch of caps but didn't know what trucks they were off of. They would say just come in and measure but I found that that it not as easy as it sounds considering each is truck specific. And I wanted the right one. Stage one auto in Lake Katrine has a bunch if you are ever in that area.
    Good luck!

How far are you from Rochester? There's a guy I was talking to that has a long bed silver Leer XQ for around 200.

Nvm he says it's for a 1st gen.

Searching and buying used is the best bet for the 2nd gen guys these days. I see way too many stories of folks spending the $2400 on a loaded cap only to find out it has defects or figment problems after 3 weeks of waiting...and the cap dealer is just 'oh well' about it.

I found mine with http://www.searchtempest.com/ it searches more Craigslist than you local. I had to drive always but I got me a nice ARE cap for 400. Sometimes getting something you know is gonna fit your truck is tricky. If you get a serial number most cap manufactures will help you out. ARE emailed me the next day after I sent them an inquiry.
