My other nag is I had the factory hitch installed when I bought the truck, yet there is no electrical connection between the truck's wiring harness and the towing receptacle, and the dealers keep saying there's no jumper cable available, which renders the hitch useless. There is an unused connector in the harness near the back of the receptacle, and I'm going to test it to see if it is the one that would power the trailer lights. Why was the hitch incomplete?

Dealer installed the factory hitch before I took delivery. I'm wondering if it came as a kit and had been cannibalized, which is not uncommon, but it annoys me that I paid for a hitch I can't use and I get no resolution from the dealers or Toyota Motor Co.

As I understand from posts around here, the harness 'plug in' spot only comes on vehicles that have the towing package, which yours did not.

While not the same year, I have a similar truck. I added my own hitch for the purposes of bike carriers and bed extender use. I didn't really need wiring. However, I've since added wiring so if I ever do need to tow a light rig I can.

Just get one of these and call it a day. http://www.etrailer.com/t1-2016_Toyota_Tacoma.htm

You'll never 'figure out' Toyota, and it's a waste of perfectly good time to do so. When you get as old as me, you'll be glad you didn't waste it on things you can't control! o_O

Well, it's still galling as hell. I s'pose I'll have to go to someplace like U-Haul to have the wiring modified. Will that void the warranty? I'm an old school aerospace refugee, and I don't do aftermarket as a rule --

Why? Did you look at the link I gave for the part you can order? It might take you all of an hour, assuming you move slow and pause for lunch.
