Hey guys, I own a 1996 Tacoma SX, 2.7L 4 Cyl. 5 Spd. 4X4 and I'm experiencing a terrible noise with it. This has only happened a few times, so I'm not entirely sure what to do, but anyway, whenever I'm driving along in 3rd gear, preparing to shift to 4th, I'll hear a really loud screeching noise. The only thing that I'm doing is pressing the gas pedal to accelerate, and every time, it's happened right before I press the clutch. I've never had this happen in any other gear, but I can't say that it wouldn't happen in any other gear.

The truck has 176,000 miles on it, so I'm expecting issues to come up, and as far as I know, the transmission has had nothing major done to it. The previous owner didn't say he had anything major done to it, so I've been expecting this to happen. My guess is that there's a bearing grinding or loose, but I'm no mechanic, so I'm asking the guys of Tacoma World for help.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Is your foot touching the clutch pedal when this happens? Have you checked the tranny fluid?

Thank you gearcruncher for providing that link. I'll look into it for some information.

And no, my foot is not on the clutch at all 98tacoma27. And I have not checked on the transmission fluid recently, but I'll look into that as a possibility.

As an update, it happened again today in the same gear, and out of instinct without really thinking, I went ahead and shifted into 4th gear and the noise didn't go away and nothing changed about it, but every time, the sound only lasts for a few seconds.

Thanks again guys, I'll keep you updated on what I find out.
