Have a 2003 regular cab PreRunner with automatic transmission and 120,000 miles on it. I am having an issue with a screeching/squeaking sound when I let off the accelerator at speeds over 45mph. This also happens when I push the accelerator through the 1st inch of pedal movement but then it goes away. Best way to reproduce is to accelerator to 65mph and then set cruise. It will screech/squeak the whole time, especially when weather is cold. Have replaced steering pump, A/C compressor, and alternator belts but still have noise. Any suggestions as to what this could be? Tried recording but could not get a good quality. Thanks in advance.

Noise coming from engine area? Or under truck? Is the sound Rpm dependent, or vehicle speed dependent. Are the belts properly tightened and did you ever replace the idler pulleys?

Hard to say. Sounds like engine area as it is more in front than underneath. Double checked that belts are tightened but have not replaced the idler pulleys. Going to start on those next to try and pin it down. Just curious if anyone else had the issue so as to point to the culprit. Thanks.

I had that happen. It ended up being the center support bearing (carrier bearing) on the drive line. The rubber gets really dry and starts to crack and split. Not sure if you still have the original one or not. But you can get under there and check the condition of it. If the rubber is trashed. Replace it.

Does the noise change if you rev the engine in neutral or increase vehicle speed?

Thanks. Will take a look at both of these and see. I am pretty sure both are still original as previous owner did not do much to this truck.

Nope still have issue. Fan clutch checked out ok and like stated above, one piece driveshaft so no carrier bearing. Going to get some fresh eyes and ears to take a look and see if they can pin point it.

If you can't find any other cause or solution, try spraying belt dressing on the belts. If the noise lessens or goes away, it means that the belts are not properly tensioned.
