I keep a small walmart plug kit and pump in the truck just for this issue. the kit's only a few bucks and has saved my butt several times.

I've also had tire shops refuse to plug a tire because the puncture is too close to the shoulder. They say that is the area where the belt (tread area) material and the sidewall material come together in the core structure and it's not safe to repair damage in that area. But some shops will plug it anyway... whether they don't know or don't care, or maybe "can't repair that area" is really just a hogwash excuse to push the sale of a new tire.

I've plugged five or six tires on multiple vehicles and never had a problem. It may not be the ideal way to fix it, but it's always worked for me.

Plug that one up, some shops will say they cannot plug it but you can find one that will plug it.

    Then...

Drop the spare tire, dismount the spare and mount it to that wheel. Mount the plugged tire onto the spare wheel. You get a new tire for free. Boom.
