Sorry I'm a newb... what, pray tell, and where would i find that? When I'm upset I use words like pray tell.

Do you have steps to help you get in and out of the truck?
I only ask because my girlfriends truck has sliders and the rear part was hitting the pinch weld when we'd hit bumps. Sounded like a similar situation since we had the same noise coming from the same location and couldn't figure it out for awhile

OK.. If you have a 4X4...try greasing the driveshaft zerks, while you are down there... Then tap and hit anything under there you can to see if you can replicate the noise... The heat shield is a first look...!!

Ah, thanks! Nope... black truck in my sig. No steps. And thanks guys, googling images of the heat shield. But waiting for the thing to cool down first.

Weren't creaky leaf springs an issue for these tacomas? Anyone have video or audio of what that sounds like? Hope it's not that....

    Love this forum.

    Okay, update:

It's not the heat shield. It's all tight.
    It's not the spare tire.
Nothing I could find under there is loose.
The leaf springs are shiny and new. There is no dirt anywhere.
It's a thing of beauty under that truck, actually. I've never seen a brand new truck undercarriage.
It's not the seat belt - in any way. Not the holster, not the bolt etc.
It's not the tool kit or jack.
    It's not the door.
    It's driving me nuts.

    Help?

Its the cab pressure equalizer. There is a vent between cab and box. Its there so your ears don't pop every time you slam doors closed.

Its like a check valve. It lets air out, but not in.

You said not the spare, but is the chain slapping around? A few people had this problem

Ah, the chain. Good call. Maybe? When the truck is swaying I could see that. However:

I may have found it. So there's a bunch of wires that run the length of the frame - front to back. They have plastic clips that attach the wires to the frame. One of the clips had come loose - and when I tapped it on the frame with my finger it made that metallic "tapping" sound. I stuck my head out from under the truck and looked at the rear door (to orient myself) and it's right where I've been hearing it. Only I can't believe I'd hear a little plastic clip tapping the frame from inside the vehicle while moving? Unless the air really blows up in there and slaps it around. Anyhow - I popped it back in, but I will seal it with electrical tape too. Anyone else ever hear this or have that problem?

We'll see if that works. If not, hopefully it's the chain.

This cab pressure equalizer - that makes a tapping/creaking sound? Or something would have to be loose to do that? I can't seem to get to it - but I can see it....

That should make any noise. It's just a plastic housing with a rubberish gasket that blows open then air pressure in the cab is greater than the outside air pressure. Unless the clips that hold that are broken I wouldn't think it's that at all.

I don't think a harness clip tapping the frame would be that loud but you never know. Keep us posted

The cab equalizer has hinged flaps. They open when the pressure from closing door pushes on them.

Try driving with a window cracked open. If noise is still there, it's not the pressure equalizer.

I drove with the door open (while my wife was driving). Noise was still there. I'm currently electrical taping the plastic clip to the frame. I'll test drive tomorrow as I'm tired. Will update. But the sound was pretty close to identical when I tapped it onto the frame while underneath. And I can imagine it would be louder with any swaying or wind whipping up. Anyway, I hope it's that and not anything in the suspension. Fingers crossed.

Only comes up over bumps? Does it sound like a clank/clunk from the rear? I have that too over odd bumps, more so at speeds almost too slow for the gear I am in or neutral (manual transmission).

Or does it sound like it is coming from the interior? Any way you could capture it on video and post it?

I will. I'm just tired of dealing with it at the moment and basking in potentially solving the riddle (without testing my hypothesis). But yes to everything you said except more of a tapping or staccato creak (not drawn out) than a clank or clunk. And, yes, I thought it was interior. But perhaps I was wrong. Blah.

A creak? Have you pushed up and down hard on the body while the car is parked? open the door, jump on and rock up and down. Hear anything? Creak makes me immediately look towards suspension (leaf springs initially) or body mounts first.
