Get this...a mouse got in my wife's new Toyota and chewed the wiring harness. Took it to local dealer, they said it needed a new wiring harness, can't be repaired. $2800. So we filed an insurance claim etc. Picked up the car today and I of course immediately looked under the hood and guess what!? Chewed wires...the exact same spot. They charged us/insurance carrier for a new wiring harness and didn't even change it! I'll be waiting for them at 8am tommorow. Should be an interesting conversation.

The insurance adjuster took some great pics of the chewed wires. I immediately took some time stamped pictures after getting it home of those same areas. It is 100% clear that the wiring harness was not replaced.

Either they replaced them with shit wire which they still need to fix or they didnt change them which they need to fix. Look at the pics and if its same spot no doubt they didnt do it, or some shit mechanic patched part of it

I do wildlife control ,and lately have run into this a lot. It is especially bad on late model GM cars, and we have found out that some of the wire insulation now being used is a soy based food type product....I have one ladies car that the squirrels are just eating apart under the hood. She has even tried parking it a couple blocks away from her home, and the squirrels are still eating the harness. It's a 2014 with 4 K on it, she sure isn't happy.....

The same thing happen to me with a squirrel, It chewed through 3 wires and the windshield washer hose. Took it to Toyota and they said, only way was new harness. $ 1800.

I took it to a small shop and they spliced wires and fixed everything for $125.

Toyota said they can't just fix one or two wires, they had to replace the whole harness, policy and insurance reasons.

Also, I now own a pellet gun.

Mice in eating wiring must be pretty common with new vehicles nowadays. I Googled "mouse repellant" and the first thing that came up was "Mouse in your engine?"

    Here were some suggestions.

    • Granulized fox and bobcat urine -- Appears to work well but have you ever trapped foxes or bobcats? I'm not sure you would want a garaged Tacoma smelling like them.
    • Peppermint oil -- Your Tacoma will smell like a candy cane. I'm not so sure how this will work as the mice around here seem to like candy canes.
    • Moth balls -- someone here on TW suggested them but only the "old" type, which are naphthalene and may be hard to find.
    • Oil of cloves (eugenol) -- this will make your Tacoma smell like something your Grandma used to bake at Christmas.
    • Pepper spray -- the next time someone works on your Tacoma and then rubs their eyes they will "thank" you for doing this.

From what I learned by watching The Turtle Man, peppermint is not liked by rats, I would think mice should have the same reaction.... I guess not then :)

Toyota doesn't own a single dealership.

Well I heard about every excuse a semi intelligent human could come up with. Ultimately they put me off until Monday. That's when the tech that apparently actually understands the wiring harness will be back in the shop. We shall see...

Are the wires before/after identical in appearance? Is it possible that it happened again? Because it isn't unlikely for it to reoccur as a snack that quickly.

Gelo has a good point, it is possible that the mouse has a nest in your truck. Can't rule that out, it IS possible.

If it's not too late, ask for the old wiring harness... unless it's long gone in the dumpster pick up.
