Sealing 3rd break light

Has anyone sealed the 3rd breake light with silicone to prevent the infamous water leak? Mine hasn't leak yet, but I'm thinking on applying some black silicone to prevent future problems.

 

I did, sealed it up using clear silicone, which I would suggest.

 

On my GMC I used butyl tape after all other dealer remedies failed. Lasted 20,000 miles or so. After that I just got wore down with other issues I have having with the truck and said the hell with it.

 

How does it look with the clear silicone? I was thinking black one to match the gasket & break light plastic frame.

 

I'd do clear, you can't see it since it dries clear.

Black isn't going to look good especially since there will be a little on the paint if you do it right.

 

Wait a minute. Pretty sure the problem only occurred if the factory forgot to remove the foam adhesive cover. If it hasn't leaked yet, I wouldn't start going nuts with JB Weld.

I've been reading the 3rd break light thread and some of the guys started have issues after a year or two. I will hate to have that problem after my warranty is expired.

 

Welp no issues here. 2 years comes April. And, as you know (per your handle), it rains a lot in H-Town.

 

Clear silicone is going to look fucking absolutely horrendous once the sun gets to it.

But to each their own. ​

 

That's why I suggested butyl tape. It can formed exactly the way you need it without a bunch of squeeze out.

 

Yep, it rains a lot. My mall princess will be two years in July and I haven't have a single problem of any kind. Maybe I'm freaking out, because I have been reading the negative threads this weekend.

 

The internet tends to concentrate all the negative and non of the positive. So you end up with forums full of people bitching about life and no one saying OHMYGAWD THIS TRUCK IS BETTER THAN SEX!!!!! There are plenty of problems with 3rd brake lights across all brands, but MOST are leak free.

Butyl Glue, same stuff manufacturers use on headlight assemblies when they seal them up.

You can heat the adhesive up in the oven for a couple of minutes and they can stretch out to be thinner if needed.

Also after they "cool" down they're basically cured.

 

The tail lights in my car are sealed with stuff like that.

 

The seal needs to occur with the truck cab. So you either need a really big oven or live in Texas or Nevada in the summer.
