I think the general argument could lean that way....or it could lean to the

"If you want to fix/work on something on your truck...You shouldn't be a lazyass and you should put in the legwork to find out about it...instead of expecting someone else to just tell you everything" direction...It's all about how you want to paint the other person.

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand the frustration.

I guess from my point of view -- not every seemingly annoying post is necessarily so. I know from personal experience that I have searched and searched for answers to specific questions/topics and after wading through numerous posts and threads, eventually turned to the community for help in locating what I couldn't on my own. Generally a post linking me to threads I hadn't been able to locate was enough and I had my answers.

I have to say that the whole "lazyass" thing is kind of against the whole point of this site, though. By sticking to that line of reasoning, then we shouldn't be here at all, and we should be out buying Haynes Manuals or all attending automotive annex classes to learn how to change the oil. Which, in turn is opposite the point of the Internet itself -- which is supposed to be the acceleration of communication and the sharing of information and ideas.

Another thing to consider is that while it may be annoying to some, to the person asking the question, it is probably a quality question, and something they are interested in. There never seems to be a shortage of people here who are willing to point a noob in the right direction, and for those who are annoyed by it, moaning and complaining would appear to be a greater waste of time and energy than just passing over the topic and letting someone willing handle it.

And the final point before I retire for the day, despite the number of reposts on the same topics -- they are actually instrumental in driving site traffic. The more data that the search engine "spiders" can collect on "Bilstein 5100s" from TacomaWorld, the higher the site will appear when said phrase is searched in an external engine. This draws more people to the site, and therefore, more new users and members.

Long way to a short story -- skipping over a post that you find annoying and that someone else is willing to help with a.) is more welcoming and positive for new and old users alike, and b.) does nothing to hurt you at all.

It does go both ways...and a lot of it is how you characterize the person posting. There are pleanty of near-repeat threads that have a different bent to the question or some minor difference...but a post like "What it the best exhaust system" from someone with 2 posts...shows me they haven't put any effort in at all.
In the end it's all an opinion thing...I think a reminder for folks to use the search feature isn't out of line...Berating folks who don't is tho. Gentle reminders/teaching is a good thing...Harassment is not.

 

I don't disagree with anything you said. I just fail to see the point of getting bent out of shape about it, is all.

 

Just like Jan and I and the others don't see the point in letting it slide without any comment. ::shrug::
