White stuff on the bolt. White stuff on the belt right at the threads. Damaged threads.

For sure I’d say you had something corrosive cause that damage.

For Pete's sake. No it is not "rust" as in iron oxide. "White Rust" is a term in general use to describe the material resulting from the oxidization of the zinc coating on galvanized metal. While the word police may be correct, if you use the term in the presence of those who deal with this problem everyone (well except the extreme newbies) will understand what you are talking about.

Think of it like Kleenex. Not all tissues are Kleenex. But if you ask just about anyone in the US to hand you a Kleenex they know what you are asking for.

My bracket has similar rust on the passenger side which seems odd considering the location. Agree with Jeep. That is the sacrificial zinc. Once it is gone you will see iron oxide rust. The driver side has no issue.

Looks like a lot of abrasion. Odd there doesnt seem to be any damage to the belt itself though

    There's nothing galvanized there though.

My truck is 3 years old, lots of wet dogs, and general crap carried back there. No "white rust".

This is mine. I have no idea why the passenger side is rusting, but as you can see, looks pretty much like the OPs. You can see where the zinc is losing the battle and rust is taking over.

Doesn't really matter what it is. The dealer should fix it without question. No way does Toyota want that liability nightmare.

Galvanized metal sounds good in theory. But in practice if you get even the smallest break in the surface you loose protection. Then the moisture migrates in and under coating corrosion begins. The problem is you can’t see it until it’s somewhat advanced.

If you want to avoid corrosion you should use an appropriate grade of stainless steel. Exposed to the wrong stuff it will oxidize nut not near as fast.

on Thursday I was in a really bad car accident Thursday night... i was on highway 1 in rush hour when the person in front of me hit his brakes, i started to slow down as well at that moment my passenger side blew a tire I didn't want to rear-end the person infront of me and made the split second decision to vear to the left. I ended up hitting the meridian but because of the blown tire i lost control and was thrown to the right where my escape ended up rolling 2 times, landing upside-down in the ditch, i crawled out of that car so fast then just collapsed on the ground. Everyone who stopped thought i had been ejected. They found me face down with blood pouring out of my face.... first responders said i was luck to be alive.... they said it was actually miracle... My face is messed up I tore the inside of my mouth from canine to canine (11 stiches) and split my chin (6 stiches) but nobody else was hurt thank god...I had to see a facial reconstructive surgeon on Monday and have beem told.i need is.. my seatbelt broke (it was still plugged in but broken) I cant believe my driver side airbag didn't go off and, my tire blew, and there were no other vehicles or people injured or involved in this accident
