Well not exactly, if I manufacture gizwads here in the US paying labor a fair wage & the country of lower slabolia approaches me & says "We here in Slabolia can cut your labor cost in more than half if you will only relocate production to our country." What do you think I'm going to do ?? You KNOW what I'm going to do, pack up all the shit & go to Slabolia,Is it because my employees are greedy, demanding more $$$? Well, no, because I'm already paying a fair wage & everyone is working & not complaining.. Is it because I'm suddenly unAmerican ?? Well, no

It's because I'm not the only gizwad manufacturer in the U.S. & if I DONT relocate, my competetor will, & that puts my whole operation at risk of going under because I can't compete with another company doing the same thing at half the cost of production

Corporations profit no doubt. But that money goes back into the business. Maybe not today. But a good portion of it does.

What you're not seeing is that a job that pays $8 today and $15 tomorrow drives not just the cost of a burger at Mickey D's up. Everything goes up. Groceries you buy at the store, the price you pay to have your car worked on (or the parts you use to fix it), and rent. In the end, you will still be paying taxes and supporting people who work at minimum wage jobs.

Having manufacturing jobs gives people a place to go. If they don't have that, you end up with low paying jobs and high paying jobs. No middle class. That's a big problem that needs to be solved.

Sadly this sounds about right :(

The state paid income for someone in Congress is $170,000. Not to mention to actually afford getting into office you need to have a shit load of money (most members of congress are worth more than 1 million) to even be considered. The people in office really don't give a shit about the average citizen. Especially when you think about how much money lobbying pumps into politics.

See, this is what I mean about everyone having valid points, I agree with you, unions can & do get in their own way,, perfect example is the UAW.. You guys know how much THOSE fuckers make/made ?? It's fucking nutts the average UAW member makes like $72 an hr with benefits, if they get laid off they drew FULL WAGES fo up tor 2 or 3 years

I'm sure that's not just unions fault alone. To do industrial work like that the safety rules in the west are a much more strict (mainly because they exist at all) when you compare it to a place like China. Look at all the nice toys painted with lead for a small example. Or the fires in the Ipod factories from unventilated dust.

You also can't just ignore environmental concerns here either.

Unless you want the country to look like that.

Unions do a lot of good and a lot of bad and blaming them for manufacturing leaving is just scapegoating.

Maybe not directly but keeping up with OSHA requirements for a place as dangerous as a steel mill and keeping up with the EPA regulations is not cheap.

    http://www.steel.org/~/media/Files/AISI/Position Papers/EPA.pdf

Keeping up with the scrubber maintenance and dealing with the toxic waste water is a hell of a lot more expensive than just saying fuck it and letting it all out.

fucking greedy employees trying to pay for food and housing, put their children through school, and hoping to not be mutilated while spending their lives working for the prosperity of those who have the money to influence those in power to keep the system working in their favor by convincing those working for them that the economy can only trickle down and they can have their food and housing only if they listen to country music and ......... where the fuck was i going with this?

Good insight.. & you're in Canada ?? But you are right, once any politician gets to the hill the only thing that matters is STAYING on the hill...

& true again, because no one in power will boot lobbyist out, its getting the best government that money can by...

I stand alone here with my fix for that.... make all national elections tax payer funded with a cap...done & done.. The lobbyist go away because the corporations that send them there have nothing to gain, & being tax payer funded levels the playing field for others out there who are smarter, better informed, better ethics,BETTER IDEAS, etc; because the barriers that kept them out of the election arena ($$$$) are gone...

tax funded with a cap , candidates all get the same amount of $$$ to run their campaigns & platforms on. I think it would force them to stick to resolving the issues since the moneys not there to run smear campaigns, makes them focus

trust me I know, I found my current employment on Craigslist. I haven't been murdered yet and all I have to do is meet in a dark alley each night, close my eyes and pretend I'm in my happy place.

wait... "plenty of jobs out there"?????

Yeah I'm from Canada and I couldn't agree more with you.

One thing I would add is that they should get paid the national average income. That way they have an incentive to bring the quality of life up for everybody instead of just the massive corporations.

But maybe I'm just a filthy liberal :notsure:

It's pretty sad that you have politicians who brag about their 30/40/xx years in congress like it's a badge they've earned. They act as if they know it all yet probably are about as far removed from their constituents as can be and I think the vast majority benefit far more than their salaries would indicate.

OBTW, in California, the voter turnout for yesterday's election? A whopping 18% of registered voters decided several major issues including a couple of bond measures.

I forget the third party candidate off the top of my head but he had a great quote.

"If everyone who didn't vote because they thought their vote didn't matter voted for me, I would be the president of the United States." (Roughly)

Once you get into stuff like gerrymandering and how bad of a system the two party system actually is it just gives me a head ache :(
