I think that looking at that 18% number says people are either disenfranchised or just don't care. However you look at it, it's pretty sad.

Especially considering how many have fought and died to give them that right.

..what good portion of this country needs is an enema of self-discipline and responsibility... ...stuck in a dead end job w/ low pay?, ...the natural instinct should be to look for ways to improve yourself and search for other jobs... ...not stomp your feet and demand somebody else give you a raise by the force of gov't...

...there are good jobs out there that pay well, and by-and-large, this is determined by market forces... ...good trades in mechanical/electrical/hvac/etc, ...engineering, healthcare, energy exploration, etc... ...but, one may be in for a surprise if their degree in Wussified Studies isn't in demand...

Guys, even tho' we've strayed from the original thread & quite honestly breached the terms of use with a little political banter I applaud all that have participated for keeping it civil in an adult manner. We don't have to agree with differing views but we DO need to remember to be respectful to one another & it appears we have... So I too am out of here..give yourselves a pat on the back & see ya later....

Fire that fucker up Chris....aawwww shit,he split without me...dammit;)

Which is exactly what happened at my supermarket job. The starting pay was $5 an hr and they couldn't get people so they had to bump it $2 an hr.

This..my father worked and my mother stayed home. Now my wife and I both work full time. I have a part time job as well. Even if we wanted to start a family it would not be an option financially. I live in an 80 yr old house, versus a new house growing up.

    WOW..this guy gets it.

I remember years ago when a service union of building cleaners went on strike. A man was interviewed on the news crying that he can't provide for his 11 kids on this wage.

Doctors and lawyers would probably have trouble with that size of a family. Nuff said.

I do not have children and apologize if it sounds a little cold, but as I see it having a family (at least of that size) should be something you hold off on if you cannot afford to.

I see both sides of the problem.
I manage a retail store that pays $10.00 an hour. A single parent working full time still qualifies for state assistance. Should that be the case? I don't know.

    Now on the other side.
If I offer that same associate overtime, they are likely say they do not want to work a lot of overtime because the extra pay will put them over the threshold and kick them off of assistance. Also it would be a sixth day. Is that right? I don't know.

What the people writing these articles are forgetting....

The vast majority of McDonald's employees work for franchises. Very, very few company owned stores still exist.

McDonald's profits are not from the sale of terrible food to the public... the corporate profits are from the sale of terrible food, overpriced licensing fees, and overpriced store fixtures and equipment to the franchise owners.

McDonald's corporate will not even entertain you for a franchise license unless you have two million in liquid assets.
From there, the franchise is only a license to start your own business using the McDonald's name on your sign instead of "Crusty XXXX Burgers"
But your deal with the devil means that you have to buy all of your food through specified sources (BTW, Chipotle also buys from Golden State Foods, I suspect they may be under the McDonald's corporate umbrella) as well as your fixtures, decorations, and even equipment. If you need a new stainless steel onion pan, you can't go to Smart & Final, Costco, or even Star Restaurant Supply and buy one, even one with the NSF seal... you buy it from corporate at double the price.

Oh, and the new remodels all of the stores are going through? Guess who pays for that. Not corporate. Corporate simply tells the franchise owners "Guess what! You're going to tear down your building and rebuild it using THESE blueprints. Sorry you're out of business for 3 months, we hope your other stores are able to support you. What, you only have one store and can't afford to shut down? Tough shit."
