I own a 2012 tacoma with 28,900 miles and just got this problem. Very frustrated with this whole thing. I have already complained to the dealer, corporate both online and over the phone. I have also filed a complaint with NHTSA. I have filed a complaint online as well on Toyota's official website. At this point looks like i'm going to have to repair this myself as I don't want to pay the dealer $2,100.00 to fix it. I read this entire blog and found it very helpful. Hopefully the repairs won't be too difficult.

    thanks everyone.

You are still under 36000. I'm assume the 3 year might get you though.

We all have shared your pain, having a $2100 repair on a 2012 with 28k miles is a bunch of crap. You can find the parts for $500 online and the repair is easy, if you need any help just chime in on this thread! Good Luck!

I'll update as well. Did the bypass mod that was suggested upthread, using the relay method initially. Looks like the relay won't stay on long enough to fool the AIT...Going to replace it with the toggle version and see how that works.

    Make it happen man.
Tell them to explain to you how this is not covered under the federal emissions warranty.
    Good luck

Sorry for your luck, Hopefully you have better luck with Toyota then a lot of us did. Many including myself were lower milage and still under powertrain warranty's and no dice. If Toyota doesn't take care of you the repair isn't to bad just the parts are going to run you about $500.

I completed my repairs and it's been a week now. So far so good seems to be running fine. The repairs took me about 2 hours to complete. My mechanic skills were a little rusty as I hadn't done this kind of work in a while and some of the bolts were hard to get to. But all in all looks good and I only paid $425 for the parts versus what Toyota was trying to charge me (over $2000).

Hey guys, got room for one more? Like most of you, my 2012 TRD just failed me at about 65k miles. Before I get into details, I just wanna say thanks to all of those who have contributed to this thread and helped me learn a ton about my truck. I am probably about the furthest thing you can get from being a mechanic, which is a major bummer in situations like this.

Anyways, I dropped my truck off at Toyota on Monday morning only to get a call 8 hours later saying that the repair was going to run me between $1000-$1300. After reaching out to a couple mechanic friends, and reading every comment on this thread, I called Toyota this morning. The lady on the phone was somewhat helpful, and said that they only way I could potentially be helped was through a "good will warranty." Considering this is my 3rd car with Toyota, hopefully that should increase my chances and I was told I'd have an answer by this Thursday.

With that said, a couple of things come to mind:

    1) This whole situation is total BS and absolutely deserves to be rectified by Toyota. I will be doing everything in my power (locally, online, and over the phone with HQ) to voice my displeasure and campaign against Toyota. It seems like most of you have already done so, but I highly encourage anyone who has not filed a Vehicle Safety Complaint to do so asap here: https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/
I will also be reaching out to the Better Business Bureau and using this entire thread to support my case.

    2) If Toyota isn't willing to help me, and I order the $500 part of my own, what is a realistic amount to expect to pay someone to help me fix my truck? Some of you said it took around an hour to complete, so I'm guessing $100 would be pretty generous?

    3) As some of you have stated, especially in the last few pages of this thread, this should absolutely be covered by the 7 year/ 70,000 emissions warranty. Does anyone know how and who we would get to enforce this warranty? Later today I plan on reading every word of that section, and collaborating with my dad who is a lawyer, to see how we can get this problem fixed for free.

    4) I can only imagine how many others have had this problem but are wealthy enough to just deal with it, or not computer savvy enough to find their way here.

Anyways, I'll keep you posted on what my outcome is, but like I said I appreciate everyone else sharing their experiences, advice, and feedback as well. and s/t to the member 'landphil' for pointing me in the direction of this thread!

    Too few to list.
This is why I was hesitant to get a 2012+ when I saw that they put a smog pump on the trucks. Smog pump failed at 7,800 miles and luckily was covered under the 3/36 warranty.

If you need any help pursuing this just let me know, I would sure like to get my $500 back. Where are you located?

2012, V6, 74,000 miles, same issue. No problems with truck (at all) until last week when the dreaded CEL and TRAC OFF came on, along with limp mode. I have an extended warranty purchased at a heck of a bargain back when Toyota allowed warranty purchases across state lines (thanks to Tacomaworld posts for helping me find this warranty at a great price). As of now, it appears that the dealer will repair under the extended warranty. Dealer still has the truck so I don't have specific part numbers, charges, yet.

Picked the Tacoma up today. Extended warranty covered everything including the towing and the rental charges. Since warranty paid I don't have any prices or labor hours to report. They replaced #25710-31022, Valve Assembly, Air Switch. They replaced #17600-0P040, Pump Assembly, Air with Brackets. They replaced #17377-31010, Two Air Tubes, Two Gaskets. The summary says "Replaced air switching valve assembly, air injection pump, and gaskets." I hope this helps everyone who is dealing with this obvious design flaw. I'm thankful for the extended warranty.
