Not surprising. The ECU change for the 2013+ to run the pump at shut off to purge moisture and exhaust gases likely only delays the onset of this failure. Wouldn't surprise me if high mileage 2013+ in the right environment are starting to fail too given how quickly some of the 2012's have failed.

At the moment in my low mileage 2015 I've only swapped out the crappy foam filter in the pump with a higher quality external one. I'll be keeping my eye on this thread to see if/when I should worry about doing more!

I'm a new member to the P2442 code club as of yesterday. Left the gym and the truck had no power, looked down and the check engine light was on as well as the traction control light. Ran by Autozone and had them scan the OBD and there it was...... the dreaded P2442 code. I took it by the dealer this morning and sure enough they say both valves are gone as well as the air pump. Estimate was $1,798. This is a 2012 model as seems to be the norm with this failure. But with only 35K miles. I told them this was ridiculous for this to happen on this model with this low of a mileage. The service rep said her hands were tied. I talked to the Service manager as well as the GM. Toyota Care was closed due to the holiday. I was sure to mention how I had purchased 10+ new Toyota's in my life as well as 2 new Lexus's. And that many of them had come from this dealership and that they currently do all my maintenance work even on my wife 2015 Lexus RC350. They told me to call Toyota Care tomorrow and plead my case and they would see what they could do.
    Fingers crossed.

I heard back from the service manager at about 6:00 pm this evening. Said he was able to get in touch with his district Toyota rep. earlier today. He said not to worry everything would be replaced at no charge. No parts no labor. He would get the parts on order and that they would be in touch with me before weeks end to set up a time to bring the truck in. He didn't say under what warranty it would be covered. Just that it would be covered at no charge.

Sort of the opposite really, as I understand it the source of the moisture is from the exhaust itself (remember exhaust is mostly H20 and CO2 if the engine is working properly). The pump running after shutdown is to purge the moist exhaust gasses with fresh air from the outside. In other words the air on the outside of the filter is the good stuff and the air on the inside of the filter is what you are trying to get out of there on shutdown.

So if we have moisture coming in through the exhaust causing the valves to fail. And the filter on the pump is deteriorating causing the pump to fail........ We then have a $2,000 attack from 2 different directions on this system??

    UPDATE:

Ordered and received the Hewett 2008-2012 Plug-n-Play Bypass Kit. It is really well built, and the directions on the wiring and block-off plates were detailed and easy to follow. I was able to install it in about 2 hours, and aside from the tight space between the rear of the engine and firewall, it went in easy. Was kind of a pain reaching the Coolant temp harness, but with a little swearing, and only minor knuckle scrapes, I got it in.

Will monitor for a while and see if any new codes pop, but for right now, I'm just going to leave this in until Toyota wakes up and recognizes the problem.

It's kind of hard to get a pic of them as they're the same size and shape as the end of the tube and sit flush. They're notched so you don't have to take the nuts/bolts completely out, just back them off enough to slip the plate between the valve body and the exhaust tube.

2012 here, with 67,000 miles. No codes yet. Is it beneficial to replace the foam filter or should I consider total bypass? Is there a more affordable plug and play bypass kit than the 354 dollar Hewitt?

Clarification question. Can you apply the bypass mod after the system is broken and throwing codes?

For some reason I remember the bypass not working after everything was busted and codes thrown. But maybe I'm remembering wrong or the kit works differently now?

Good question. I would like to be proactive but I don't like being counterproductive either.

You have this backwards. The air feed to the valves comes from the pumps. The pumps get their air from the front, near the air intake.

The pumps feed the valves, then that air gets fed to the cats(exhaust).

The idea is to feed more oxygen to the cats during cold start up to burn off excess fuel in the exhaust. Remember, the engine is running very rich at cold start. Extra oxygen burns off that fuel, thus cutting down on emissions.

I don't know how Toyota dodges the emission warranty with this well know issue.

Correct, the bypass will only work with a working system.

Are you sure? I don't have a Tacoma with this system, but I do have a Tundra. I installed the bypass system 5 years ago. I have a bad valve but the system still works fine.

Once you clear the codes by removing a battery cable, the pumps and valves are never used again. the AIP doesn't even do a system check.

Could be wrong but that's I've gathered from the previous threads that I've read.

Got my valves and Air pump replaced yesterday. Thank goodness the parts finally came in. I was getting tired of unhooking the battery every morning to clear the Limp mode out. And my many thanks to my local Toyota dealership for getting this $1800 repair done under a Goodwill warranty.
