I cleaned out all the hoses that were going to be reused with the air compressor blew out the fan, and the foam filter in the pump! The 2nd valve was stuck open and its obvious why there was pieces of rubber and condensation falling out when I turned it upside down.

You might want to remove the internal foam filter and add an external filter instead. There are lots of reports of the crappy internal one drying out with age and coming apart. When this happens the fragments fall into the fan impeller and burn it up. The Uni filter mod is pretty common.

That's how my valves looked as well, rear most valve was the worst. I wonder if there is a way for us to eliminate the moisture in the system that is destroying these valves.

It's sad that you look at it that way. I'm saying fuck luck and ill set that fucker on fire in their parking lot and leave it, if they don't fully cover it. Nobody likes a quitter, except for the stealerships.

How else are you supposed to look at it? I spent a week fighting corporate and the dealership, what's sad is Toyota doesn't recognize this problem for us and cover it. At some point getting to work and hauling my family around became more important then fighting for Toyota to cover anymore so I spent my $500 and had the truck back up and running in 30mins.

Well I just hate hearing these dealerships say they nor Toyota know about the issue with Tacoma's when that's total bullshit. Mid year for the 12's they noticed the problem and replaced the parts. Just happens the the gf's truck was manufactured before they picked up on the problem. She still has powertrain and two emissions warranties, which are good for 80k miles, on the truck but the parts in question fall under some bullshit 3yr/30k mile warranty.

Yep tells me they knew of the problem and giving us a screw job lol emissions related parts should have the longest of all warranties.

Yeah, but if you ask the dealer this is *not* an emissions part. So I was told.

2012 V6 is NOT covered by California Emissions (7/70K). The '13 and newer is covered. All the 2TR-FE (4 cyl) are covered.

I agree with you 100% they know of the issue and that's why it got corrected. The fact that they worded the warranty in there favor is a bunch of crap to. This is an emission part, that's its whole purpose. I first tried to get it covered under my powertrain, which they even tried to charge me $100 diagnostic fee once they said it wasn't covered. I flipped out on that and they didn't charge me, I'm under powertrain warranty and the truck is stuck in limp mod with check engine light on, wth did they want me to do. Then tried the emission warranty and to was told this isn't an emission part and no coverage, these valves are only covered for 3yr30k. Bunch of crap but what are you gonna do? I filed with the NHSTA like others have done and I filed away my receipt for the parts just incase Toyota wants to make this right, but my guess since its only the 12' model years that most likely wont happen.

So i joined the dreaded Secondary Air Injection Switching Valve Open club on Saturday. But it had a good outcome..so here is my situation/advice.
    - It happened on my 2012 at 38K miles. ....and went into Limp Mode on Saturday night. I had the codes read for free at Autozone which showed P2442.
    - I spent the weekend bookmarking and printing every instance of either Dealership Goodwill warranty or Toyota approving it fixed under warranty. also printed up the TSB on the Tundra.
    - I normally keep my truck clean, but I made it look brand new inside and out, before I took it in. I wanted to show it is well taken care of. This is the first time my Tacoma has ever been in the shop (for other than normal service).
    - I know a lot about working on cars, but I went in calm, polite and played a little dumb.
    - Took it to the dealership I bought it at and had all normal service done
    - I said the following "I got the check engine/traction lights and it won't go over 30mph. I will be honest with you, I had the codes read and it showed Secondary"...at that point the service manager interrupted me and finished the sentence....he said we get that all the time and asked if I had an extended warrany (which the answer was No) I then said..I understand this is going to be expensive...he said "Yes it it is". I replied, "I understand this exact same part/problem is covered under a special extended warranty for a Tundra, but not the Tacoma." He said that is correct.
    - I then ask "I am hoping you can work with me on this? Can you or the Service Director authorize a Good Will Warranty or should I call Toyota during the day?" He said "lets confirm the problem and I will call you before we start any work."
    - 2 Hours later he called "We are going to take care of this for you. I already spoke with Toyota and it will be fixed free of charged (both the diverter and pump)" (I never had to break out my file of evidence of previous warranty grants)
    - I asked about it happening again and if I should invest in a bypass. He said...they used "Newer version" of the parts...the sponge will not be sucked in....he said it is happening so often on the 2012+ Tacoma's he had no doubt it will be added to the Tundra TSB. He said if it happens again, they would cover it again.

    - It appears low miles helped my situation. It has 38K on it and will be 5 years old in June.

    - That is my story, thank you to everyone who provided evidence and advice..and good luck to all.

Nice! Glad to see it worked out for you, a good dealer is no doubt a key in getting this handled. Also like to hear him talking about it being added to the Tundra TSB. I had to use goodwill warranty at my dealer to get them to cover the tsb for engine pinging so when this came around not much help from them again. But I can replace these parts and not able to reprogram the truck ecm so I guess take it for what it is.

So he confirmed that the new parts are a new design? I'm going to have to compare your part#'s to what I replaced mine with. Thanks for the info.

Good luck to you, seriously, I did exactly the same thing about a year ago. Almost exactly the same mileage and scenarios. See my other posts. I don't believe there are new or updated parts. Or maybe I will believe it when I see it.

There are new parts because Toyota started putting them on the 2012 Tacoma's mid way through manufacturing. You can look up the vin number and it will tell you what time frame the truck was manufactured and if it has the newest parts. What I don't understand is why it's so much of a difference across the board with people getting this coverage for these parts. Toyota paid for the parts and we paid $245 for the labor.

Just got this problem. 2012 64k... I have the code P2442. Any way to determine if it's just the valves or the valves and pump. Looking to replace it myself.

I'd take the shot and see if Toyota will cover it. I've got no problem with turning my own wrenches but the more people that turn these problems in the more it's going to help.

What are the codes exactly? There's bank open 1, bank open 2, closed 1 and closed 2, and I think each of them have their own associated codes.
