Just a heads up for you guys with this issue, I just got off the phone with Toyota and they confirmed that the air injection valves are covered under the 5/60k warranty.

Highly recommend before your warranty runs out on this air injection system. While it's still working to purchase this by pass system kit. https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/

I'm looking into that, right now just want to get it fixed while I'm still under warranty. But since this is the 2nd time it has failed on me I don't trust that air injection system at all!

For 4.0's, What about re-flashing the engine to a Pre-2012 tune to effectively write out the programming for the pumps? This is another method used by some BMW drivers to bypass the system. They change the tune over to a euro spec tune on the same vehicle that was not equipped with secondary air equipment.

Well no dice on my end, dealer today said they wouldn't cover it. I call back Toyota corporate who puts me in touch with regional manager and him and service manager decline coverage. Acknowledge that I had it in there at 29k for the issue but couldn't be of service now.

So I limp my truck home and take the stupid pump apart, it's good. Take valves off and they are full of moisture, rust and the rubber around the valves is in terrible shape. Poor design imo and destined to fail on all Tacoma's with this system. Here are some pics of what it looked like. The front most valve wasnt to bad but I'd starting to show signs of the rubber coming apart. Where are you guys sourcing these? Looks to be a Toyota only part.

Thought it was odd about you saying it's covered under warranty, everyone else was saying 3 years/36K miles. Suggest to contact https://www.hewitt-tech.com/store/ and ask if it'll by pass those codes, then you won't ever have to worry of it ever failing!

I was just going off what I was told, I still have a case open with Toyota and will hear back in 1 business day. If I don't accomplish anything for myself maybe it will help others down the line.

I have noticed that the part number changed and is now 25710-31022 vs 25710-31020 or 25710-31021. I dnt know if its for inventory purpose or if they have made changes. Also on the 2013-up trucks the air pumps have a cover on them vs, 2012 trucks that didn't. Did they do this to try and reduce pump sound or does it help insulate the pump in some way?

I ended up replacing the valve today, Part# 25710-31022 at a cost of $470.00 and that was at Priority Toyota who was the only dealer with one in stock. My dealer Charles Barker who I took the truck to for warranty work wanted $1,396.79 for the repair. Replacement was very straight forward and only took me about 40min.

As far as the part number change, their always doing upgrades. If their like a minor change to install on today's current production model and it can be used in combination of later models. It's much easier inventory with a universal part. I'm guessing about your second part. When the air injection pump goes bad/solenoid valve stuck open, exhaust gasses back feeds into the pump causing a loud sound vacuum cleaner like noise. The pump has a small cheap like sponge. Over time it'll come apart and when hot exhaust gasses back feeds, you'll get a rubber burning smell. The pump intake, should be redesign and hooked up to the fresh air intake box to prevent from drawing in salt/water/road debris. Toyota has raped everyone on these parts and labor, easy money $1400. Tune-up, 4 wheel brake, & oil change combine would have been cheaper.

I did take my pump apart and check the filter, it was intact so my problem was the design flaw of the valves. I think I am going to eliminate the foam filter though as it can only lead to trouble down the road. I came across this thread where lexus guys are removing the filter and placing a breather filter on the end of the pump housing instead.

Probably not covering it like the Tundra, as very few Tundra's are equipped with the 4.0. I don't know if the Tundra fix even covers the 4.0.
That said, owning an early 12 V6 (Made in Dec 2011) makes me very unhappy to hear this. There is no after-shutoff run on my truck to clear moisture.
I'm past my 3/36, and gone toe to toe about emissions equipment failures on my other Toyota's, and 3/36 is the limit of factory warranty coverage for this stuff. The 5/60 is for engine/tranny internal parts. The 8/80 is only for CATs.
Hopefully Toyota will issue a coverage extension for the 12+, 4.0 like the Tundra, or at least flash the equipment to run the pump after shutoff as they did the later 12+

Running the pump after shutoff should be able to be programmed into the 12' trucks. You would think that Toyota would issue a TSB and take care of this for us, but instead they quietly change the programming on the 13-up Tacoma's to run the pump after shutdown to evacuate moisture.

Bad thing for me is my truck had the symptoms of a stuck valve intermittently when I was at the 29-32k mileage range. I had it documented and then mine fails at 53k and no help. I know Toyota is "supposed" to be a superior brand but I'm having my doubts.

Be careful what you wish for.

Toyota has a reflash for the Tundra trucks to have the pumps run post shut down. If you reflash, you will not be able to install the by pass mod. I expect the Tacomas will have a reflash soon. Its the same system.

I have resisted having my Tundra reflashed for this reason exactly. I only want the ECU to do a system check during cold starts only. If you reflash, there will be system checks at any time. If pumps can't run because you bypassed, you get a CEL and limp mode.

My Tundra has the AIP bypass mod. I don't live in a smog check state, but I would be willing to bet that the truck would pass a smog check.

For you guys with 2012 trucks when do your pumps run? I've noticed on mine it does not run on every cold startup, last couple days the highs have been in the 30's and it doesn't operate. In contrast my fathers 2013 runs every single cold start no matter the temp.

I am looking into the bypass mod that billybob mentioned as this is a flawed system and will fail again, just a matter of time. For al you 2012-up Tacoma guys you should add the bypass to your mod list before you to get stranded when this system fails.

The pump on my 2015 Tacoma 2.7- L. seems to run every time at shutdown. Does this mean the bypass mod would not work on this truck? Not having any problems yet , but planning for the future.

Cleared the P2442 and it stayed out for a week or so. Came on one more time, I cleared it and all was good until this morning. Now p2440 is also coming on and its hard set. Clear it and it comes back right away.

Phoned toyota, they said need to see the truck to determine if its warranty and its my responsibility to get it to them. They are 150 miles away..... Tow charge is $500 and they wont cover that even if its warranty lol.

SO my question is this. Is there a delete kit for this system? Id rather just get rid of this system then pay the tow bill plus possible repair bill when I can do this my self.
